Re: The "Incorrect Aspect Ratio" Thread

I have been waiting for months for the aspect ratio on 'American Scary' to be corrected. I was told that they had to request a new file from the studio. I decided to be the squeaky wheel and try to get the grease. I found the official website for the film and e-mailed the filmmakers directly. I asked them to please provide Vudu with a new file ASAP because the current one is unwatchable.

Hopefully if they see that customers who paid for their movie are getting annoyed, they will be quicker to provide Vudu with the new and corrected file.

I believe that both 'Gremlins' & 'Gremlins 2: The New Batch' are incorrect. They were both shot in 1:85:1 if I'm not mistaken. They are playing back in 16:9 with no bars. I don't believe this is wide enough :-(

Nevermind - the blu-ray is the same ratio

Not to mention 16:9 works out to ~1.78:1, just slightly narrower than 1.85:1 -- and only slightly more than the difference between 1.37:1 "Academy ratio" and 4:3 (~1.33:1) SD. Maybe annoying to a purist, but nothing compared to cropping to fullscreen, or even scope to 1.78-1.85:1.

Good lord, can we please get BATMAN BEGINS and CHRISTINE fixed? It is a CRIME to see any John Carpenter films in anything but 2:39:1 widescreen. This hasn't been changed in YEARS now. Please!

The Towering Inferno starts out in the correct OAR (2.35:1). But after the credits it switches to 1.85:1.

I tried it on my iPad, and I get the same problem. It's windowboxed with black bars on all 4 sides.

It looks fine on my TV. It's 1.33:1 in SD, HD & HDX (black bars on the sides).

BTW - How annoying is that iPad app. With no way to sort or search, it took me 15 minutes to find the damn movie in my library.

Good to see at least a little ground is being made on getting some of the incorrect ones corrected.

Rope is actually presented correctly. The reason you are seeing it with 4 borders is because the 4:3 picture, which is the ratio the film was composed for, is presented letterboxed in 16:9 so that it is presented correctly on a modern TV. The iPad's aspect ratio is not 16:9, thus the picture looks wonky for you. Using the iPad's zoom feature (double tapping the screen) may be able to fill up the screen without losing any of the 4:3 picture, so I would try that out.

Please add "Paint Your Wagon" to the list.

It's 2.35 to 1 and showing in HDX as a standard definition 1.33 to 1 transfer.
