    Rental Price Increase?

We usually rent movies from Vudu on average three times per month, but it's been three or four weeks since we rented a movie. In the past the price has always been $4.99 for 720p. My wife and I sat down tonight to watch Skyfall but the price was $5.99 for 720p - the same price as 1080p... WTH?

A 20% increase in rental fees is rediculous, so I closed Vudu and opened Netflix instead.

I didn't see other threads on this subject, and am wondering why it hasn't been discussed?

Highly varies by studio, what they provide, and how much they charge for it. If the studio charges the same rate for 720 or 1080 Vudu can either charge a similar and equal amount like they have in that case; charge less, loose move, and perhaps the studio contract for breaking an agreement; or charge more, **** more people off, make more money, and possibly still loose the studio contract.

Since the prices are publicly available without logging in, without adding to cart, and shown country wide it's considered advertising. If the studio contract has an MSRP clause, or Unilateral Pricing to dealers then Vudu is at big risk.

If it's only MSRP a physical store can sell for whatever they want, but can't put it on their website or in the paper. If it's Unilateral dealer purchase pricing they can't even SELL it in the store for anything besides the price the manufacturer set's.

Vudu doesn't have the luxury of a physical and don't want to have to hide the prices like Amazon (and others ) have to on some item's where you don't even know the price unless you add to cart, or worse log in and start check-out.

Many of the titles are still teared for different quality.

yeah I noticed that with the recent Bourne movie too. I watch Vudu via a Roku XD on one of my TV's and have not had the chance to see what they are going for on Amazon but plan to check. I'm not sure if it is a studio or Vudu thing.

I tend to purchase my titles so haven't really noticed until you said, just checking now and I see "Hitchcock" is $5.99 for 720p and $6.99 for a 1080p rental. I wonder if its a case of trying to push people into purchasing rather than renting, why Rent a title for $7 when you can purchase it for $8 more..

Will be interesting to see if these prices roll out over on Amazon and itunes too or if this is just VUDU pushing these price increases.

I'm pretty sure the reason is that it's a pre-Blu Ray release (Hitchcock BD is coming out 3/12/13). I wouldn't be surprised to see it go down to the "standard" new release rental price after that date. That being said, $15 for HDX purchase isn't bad, looks like the BD is $34 pre-order from Amazon...

Part of that is because Amazon is only taking 15% off the $39.99 instead of their more typical 40-50% off of pre-orders (for some lame reason, especially since it didn't do well in theaters even with good reviews) which means it should be priced around $20-24 under more common circumstances. That said $15 is awesome. Amazon is only quoting as "Digital Copy" so who knows with Ultraviolet, it is Fox after all.

Hi Jake, thanks for the response. If it is just a slight tweak to the VUDU pricing for being a pre-release Blu-ray rental then that is pretty fair, I can't argue with that. I like the $14.99 price point that we've been seeing on some new releases, I'd love to see that become the standard price point across the board for most new releases on VUDU but I realise that is up to the studios as much as VUDU. Even just price matching titles with Amazon Instant and itunes would be a great start.

Also, can I just mention that I've been using "fanhattan" on my pc recently. I really like the concept of a one stop media aggregation site to find content online. Type in the name of a film or show and it gives you all available online outlets for it, plus pricing. I know you guys are officially partners with them now and I'm seeing a fair amount of VUDU content appear next to films on their site. There is a problem though in that right now in that a LOT of VUDU's content ISN'T being flagged as available when it actually is. I'll give you an example, "Star Trek" (2009) shows as available to buy via itunes and Amazon Instant.. no Vudu though. I don't know who behind the scenes deals with the guys at Fanhattan but I'd suggest that there needs better integration between you guys otherwise you're dropping revenue from it.

For the $15 price on Hitchcock I sure wouldn't have minded using some of my CinemaNow credit to get this in my Vudu account. To bad that all vanished LOL
