Vudu vs iTunes vs Blu-ray on AVSForum

AVSForum has been running detailed quality comparisons of Vudu vs iTunes vs Blu-ray. They've done three films so far. I was thinking that the finding might prove valuable to the folks at Vudu with some very constructive, detailed, and critical feedback about your streaming quality.

    Life of Pi

    Argo

    Skyfall

Thank you formsharing this. The analysis and comparison by AVS between Vudu HDX and iTunes 720 and 1080 is fascinating stuff.

AVS clearly reveals Vudu's audio to be superior. It's also good to know that in many cases, so is Vudu's HDX video quality.

Personally, I find HDX files - especially for newer films -- to be pure eyecandy. Life of Pi is a prime example as is Wreck It Ralph.

Do we really give all the credit to Vudu? Do the studios supply the actual HDX file to Vudu or does Vudu create the HDX file itself? Either way, I am happy - most of the time.

The way I read the three reviews, the conclusion was that iTunes had better audio and the iTunes 720 download had better video in most cases, except for Life of Pi, which gave the nod to HDX. Some people still preferred blu-ray of course. You won't ever win over everybody, but it's clear that vudu is very very good. Congrats!

Re: Vudu vs iTunes vs Blu-ray on AVSForum

I was surprised that the slant in quality towards Vudu HDX over iTunes wasn't stronger across all three films. DD+ should be tangibly better than iTunes DD which in most cases is old-school 384 kbps DD.

Also, on the video front, the reviewer spent a lot of time talking about the encoding results and how Vudu tended to smooth film grain whereas iTunes encodes retained it. That's something I'd suggest the Vudu tech folks take a look at it as it would affect a large number of catalog titles.

Re: Vudu vs iTunes vs Blu-ray on AVSForum

Personally I found iTunes 1080P to have lower Video Quality compared to Vudu HDX. But my testing was limited and I haven't done it in some months so things could have changed.

Maybe iTunes has marginally better sound or picture or 5.1 HDX. What brings me back to Vudu is: Interface, Discounts / Coupons, 3D, 7.1 Audio. iTunes doesn't offer enough for a marginally perceptible sound or picture difference.

Re: Vudu vs iTunes vs Blu-ray on AVSForum

The posts are quite interesting. Note, however, that it's a little bit of an apples to oranges comparison from a pure encoding perspective.

VUDU HDX is currently optimized for streaming and instant playback, while iTunes is optimized for download. It is much more difficult to achieve a target quality for streaming than for download for a given bit rate budget.

Wow, a response by Prasanna Ganesan! Congrats on your Visionary of the Year Award! I was just reading your interview in Home Media Magazine! It is very interesting! I was especially interested in your thoughts about the future of UltraViolet. The idea of upgrading to 3D or 4K is very intriguing. For the moment though, I would much like to upgrade a few of my SD films to HDX.

On another note, there are a lot of people on the Home Theater Forum who don't believe in UltraViolet. I have been trying to defend it for several months. Perhaps you could take a look at this thread if you have time, and respond to it.
