At this speed movies will download in....

Maybe there is a chart somewhere already but if not it would me nice to know how long a movie would take to start showing at different speeds. I think it would help potential customers who are not at 2Mbps or greater. For instance, on tests my dnld speed is around 1.3Mbps, upload at 750kbps so I anticipated maybe a 20 minute delay. But first movie was 2 hours!!!! I understand there is an outside chance this may improve as Vudu learns my network connection (which should be mentioned in quickstart guide to avoid calls & frustrated new customers) but I don't know for sure if it will. It would be nice to know that at 1.2dwn/0.7up I should expect a typical 115 minute movie to be ready after xyz minutes...that way if I don't get that I can start looking for problems.

It may vary a lot depending on other activity, which is why the VUDU provides live estimates and updates them throughout the download.

I understand it will vary, maybe even drastically, depending on other variables. But under a normalized 1.3Mbps dnld w/o any other hindering variables such as other traffic, slow internet day (massive worm outbreak or something), what would be expexted? Asked another way, if after 100 dnlds I still take 2 hours per movie is that to be expected at 1.3? if so, fine, but if not I would go hunting for other causes (neighbor leached onto my connection, desktop running stuff in background, router neefs static IP not dhcpM etc). There has to be a benchmark that indicates when a system on a certain speed isn't living up to those speed connections, otheewise how would I know if there was a problem or not w/o at leqst some expectation of performance on a normalized connection w/o other stuff interfering?

        Hello bspooky,

There are other per-movie variables that are not related to your networking conditions that would make one movie download "faster" than another so even if we could normalize the connection, we would still have a difficult time providing a benchmark to measure against. That's why the box takes your connection into account, along with the stuff it knows about the movie, to compute the ETA.
If you have significantly less than 2 Mbps (which is the case for you), then ETAs of 1 to 2h do not seem abnormal.

        Cheers,

        -- Greg

Thanks Greg...that helps. I was concerned I should have only been having delays of 20 minutes....didn't know 1.3 vs 2.0 was that signifigant. But if my 1-2 hours is to be expecred that is fine. It is a wonderfull feature (that I didn't ever see advertised) that you can rent a movie for 29-30 days as long as you don't start watching it (at least the ones I looked at were that long). Makes it easy to have a few in the rental queue ready to go! Will just have to see when watch one if can rent/dnld another at the same time.

Re: At this speed movies will download in....

Generally speaking your average 1.5~2 hour SD movie can be watched in real time if you have about 2MB/second of totally free download bandwidth, and about 200KB/second of free upload bandwidth (disclaimer - results not guaranteed, your mileage may vary, testing was performed on a closed course, blah blah blah). The formula is fairly linear, however variations in the compression from one movie to the next will impact this. In other words it usually takes about 2 hours to completely download a 2 hour movie (120 minutes * 60 SEC * 2048/SEC = 14,745,600 units of measure).

In your situation (1.3M down /750K up), it will take about 200 minutes to completely download (14,745,500/ 1228/SEC / 60SEC). This is only true if absolutely nothing else is competing with your Vudu for the bandwidth. However, you don't have to wait the whole 3 hours and 20 minutes to start watching the movie. If everything was running perfectly, I'd anticipate the ability to start watching the partially downloaded movie about 1 hour and 30 minutes after you begin the download (you would be starting the movie about 110 minutes before it is finished downloading, so you both cross the finish line at about the same time).

Now, if anything else is happening on your network (PC's, network appliances, media serves, Bit Torrent, VOIP, etc..), the total download time will easily increment upwards from the 200 minutes estimate to the 240 minute or longer timeframe. I'm guessing you do not feel compelled to demand that the family stop using the internet with you want to rent a show.

            Does that help?

P.S. Any chance you can get a faster download speed from a competitor to your current ISP?

Re: At this speed movies will download in....

Ed, those numbers also help quite a bit too. The ROUGH estimate of 2Mbps * 120 minutes yields to 240 / 1.3 = 184 minutes seems like a good guestimate, & watch part way through when it buffers up enough. I so have one other isp that would easily jump me up over the 2Mbps mark but at near doubiling my monthly charge. Easily affordable, but perhaps not the best use of the money (at least for me compared to a nice dinner out with the wife, perhaps a health club membership, etc.). though if we all get hooked on Vudu maybe it will be worth it!

Re: At this speed movies will download in....

I currently have an 8 Mb/sec connection. However, those who know me from the past know that this is new. Up until a month ago, I had a roughly 1.5 Mb/sec connection. Greg knows about this all too well as we had a LOT of conversations about it.

Vudu put a lot of work into determining the amount of buffering needed to watch a film w/o interruption once it started. I can guarantee you that with 1.5 Mb/sec you need to wait about 45 minutes before watching. Keep in mind that 1.5 Mb/sec is the TOTAL throughput. That includes TCP/IP overhead and your actual data throughput is going to be 1100 to 1200 kbps. At that rate, you need to buffer about half the movie before you can watch.

Trust me - I've been on both sides of the issue. If you can get the higher speed, it is WELL worth it...
