Are uravilet redemption codes supposed to be the theatrical versions?

When i entered my code that came with the unrated "Ted" blu ray, i got the rated edition instead of the unrated edition. I assume this will happen with the unrated edition of "This Is 40" when i pick it up as well. Is this supposed to happen? Is there any way i could use the code for the unrated edition instead of the rated edition?

If you buy the unrated on Blu-ray or DVD most ultraviolet codes are good only for the rated version. There are some exceptions to this I just can't think of any at the moment.

I can confirm that This Is 40 is the rated version when you redeem it. That happens a lot with VUDU UV codes and disc-to-digital transfers. Of the top of my head, the following showed up in my account as the theatrical or rated versions:

      Kingdom of Heaven
      Wild Things
      The Da Vinci Code
      Troy
      This Is 40
      Ted
      Stripes(SD)
      Terminator Salvation
      Hellboy
      The Patriot
      The Last of the Mohicans(SD)
      Friday the 13th(2009)
      Superbad
      Dumb and Dumber
      Donnie Brasco
      Daredevil
      Forgetting Sarah Marshall
      Zodiac
      American Reunion
      The Five-Year Engagement
      The Blues Brothers

Now I'm not necessarily complaining as I actually prefer the theatrical cuts of several of the aforementioned films, but just be warned that you won't always get the unrated or director's cuts of the movies even if that's the only version included on the actual Blu-ray/DVD.

UV codes are generally the theatrical cuts, since all sites that link to UV (like CinemaNow, Vudu, Flixster) are guaranteed to have the theatrical cuts. Not all services will provide the same cuts, as some services may not have Unrated or Extended cuts available.

Which is a bit annoying when you prefer a certain service for content delivery...and there's no way to watch my Sony Digital library on my Sony PS3...go figure.

You can add The Hangover 2 and The Man With The Iron Fists to that list. I don't know about anyone else but me personally I prefer the extended or unrated version of a film. Also, when I buy an extended or unrated version of a movie then the studio should provide that version of the movie on my digital copy. If I wanted the theatrical version then I would have bought that version. Now you have to go through the trouble of having the theatrical version deleted from your UV and VUDU account and going to D2D the extended/unrated version, if its even available for D2D.

I dont know if there are any moderators viewing this, but maybe you could add an option to upgrade to the unrated version of a movie? Even if its something like a $2 upgrade fee, that wouldn't be so bad. Since the inclusion of UV digital copy codes in blu rays began, i have been buying the blu rays to use as backups and using the UV copies as my primaries. It becomes really annoying when I want to watch the unrated cut of ted, but have to turn to the disc. Sony was nice enough to include both cuts of total recall. Anyway, i think an upgrade feature would really benefit the community.
