Ultra HD TV is here, movies are being made in 4k. When will I beable to upgrade from HDX to UHDX?

UHD or 4k movies are around 150gb per movie. It's gonna be awhile till a streaming service and a decent amount of ISP's let us stream that big of a file.

I agree, change all the HDX movies that have only Stereo as the audio to at least DD 5.1 before we worry about 4K movies.

It was just a question. Not a demand for it. Things need to evolve and I was curious.

I know it's down the road but one day we all will probably have a 4K TV or even 8K and how happy are you going to be with all your movies stuck at 1080P? Customers demand pushes Technology. If there is a need and demand for higher internet speeds, it will get done. Europe has faster speeds... it can be done. If our Internet providers realize the customers are wanting faster speeds for 4K or whatever... Demand.

I wont believe VUDU sends their entire team to work only on lossless lol.

There are a sizable number of reasonable 4K TV's shipping this year in the $2-5k range. Yes, you heard right. While most of the 4k TV's are 80-100 inches there are several 50-60 inch models coming out this year priced in the $2-5k range. Now there sets are from Vizio and some lower brands you've likely never heard of. What this mean's is you can get a lower brand 4K set for the same price as a higher brand 1080P. This will be interesting.

Sony and Red Digital have also announced 4K streaming for their propitiatory products. Red Digital will be interesting as they will have a $10k front projection, read 100+ inch screen for $10k and 4k streamer for $1.5.

NetFlix also stated they will have 4k (budget) streaming in 2-3 years.

Vudu may have to get back into the hardware game.

Now how this will all shake out with the studio's is anyone's guess.

The problem with a "smaller" 50-60" UHD TV is that the human eye can't see the difference unless you get much closer to the TV. If you don't move your chairs or couch closer to the TV, a 4K TV should be larger than your current TV for your eyes to notice a difference in resolution.

Agreed. Tell that to the people with 1080p plus phones. Haha.

In either case there are plenty of people with 50"+ sets and sit less than 10 feet. I know I have a 65 and sit less than 10 and a 118" projection I sit 12 feet from. Not to mention the 30" and 37" panels at my two offices I sit 3-4 four feet from. Add in better than 20/20 vision. I'll personally benefit with 4k in most of my viewing.

I bought my 55 inch LG 4K for a little over $2,000.00 on sale at Best Buy. Granted 4K movies are slim right now but I believe in a few years we will be seeing them. In the meantime the upscaling engine that LG has looks good right now. When I bought my TV at Best Buy and they had more than 4 sets playing 4K content and that is what sold me. I know it looks good when my wife said, "You were right, I admit that it looks much better." I had bought a top of the line 1080p and it looked good but when I saw 4K I exchanged it. What tempts me right now is the soon to be reality of 4K. Just look at the Tears of Steel 4K video and you will understand, true 4K is simply breathtaking.

Number of issues to be resolved.
UHD format isn't even fully finalized yet even though there are sets out there that can display the resolution. Issues like the color space aren't set.

Then there is the issue of encode and hardware support. General consensus is that there isn't a point to h.264 streaming of UHD as you have bandwidth issues and you can't even get full blu-ray quality movies from streaming so flipping to UHD at the same bandwidth constraints would do nothing. Hardware/chipset support for h.265, which will save some bandwidth (for all content) isn't in most devices even shipping today and it will be years until providers see a critical mass.

I would suspect you would see one-offs starting to creep in over the next year, like Netflix is doing, but for it to be common place in stores like Vudu, and for them to have answers to your upgrade questions, you are likely looking at least two years.

Though, as is often noted, resolution is not the bottleneck to better, more realistic perceived image quality. ANSI contrast (intrascene dynamic ratio) for encode and display (possibly addressed with Dolby HDR effort), color space (rec 2020 may be included in UHD spec), and of course increased bandwidth for when streaming to allow for less lossy encode.

should be coming sooner then you think do to the newer compression software HVEC streams faster 2x or 4x faster then mpg2 /mp4 , netflixs is implementing it as we speak as far as audio goes we may still have only limited options for now, would like to see other audio langues added .

Technically it could come any time.

However there are too many variables, studio sign-offs, potential hardware limits on Vudu's end, etc.

Vudu was FIRST with 7.1 audio, 3D, and even quality 1080P but they are not the first with 4K. Vudu REALLY needs to get up to speed.

MGO was planning to launch 4k streaming by the end of this year, but I don't know if their plans have been delayed, it's almost November, and they haven't made an official announcement.

This is one of the reasons I went with Vudu; if something ever happened to them or I just felt like it I could switch to a different UV service and still have access to "most" of my collection.
