Why are only 5 devices allowed?

What does vudu care how many devices you have attached to your account, if you are only watching movies on one device at a time?

We currently have the ability to watch on up to four televisions at a time and soon a fifth will be added. As for devices, we have 1 television, 1 Roku device, and 2 Blu-rays. We may be adding a second Roku device soon for that fifth television. This doesn't include my laptop and my Andriod tablet that we use when we want to watch a movie when we are on the go.

The limitation seems silly to me with people getting more and more gadgets.

This silly issue has been covered many times in the forums. Netflix and Amazon could care less how many devices you activate but VUDU seems to think 5 devices is standard and refuse to change it! Maybe when they have more competition they will be forced to revisit this silly limit! Cmon Amazon go UV please!

I think it is because there is a difference between streaming and downloading. Amazon only allows you to download to 2 devices and Netflix doesn't download at all. The 5 device limit for streaming doesn't make sense to me but maybe if it applied to downloading it might?

There has to be some sort of limit otherwise you could just hand out your details to any of your friends or family and let them all watched your purchased content for free.

If there was no limit to the number of devices but a limit to the number of streams active at any one time for one account that might work better but obviously could still be abused.

Personally I just have a lot of devices and don't like unlinking and relinking. Except for the wife no one else has access to my account.

An UltraViolet account provides access to a Digital Rights Locker where licenses for purchased content are stored and managed irrespective of the point of sale. The account holder may register up to 12 devices for playing downloaded files.

If this is true about "UltraViolet" then why would VUDU have different rules or restrictions?

This gets back to what is it EXACTLY that we are paying for when we purchase digital rights to movies. Is it the right to watch the movie from the cloud? If so, why does "the cloud" need to worry about the details? I am logged in from one of my 20 or 30 devices and from anywhere in the world...let me watch my movie. Or, is the license more restrictive than what we've been lead to believe?

The license is more restrictive. Way more restrictive. But having access to most all your content at most all places without having to carry around a single disc is better even with the restrictions. And it's getting better. Vudu has added support for more devices. UltraViolet has come along. Vudu has cross integrated with UltraViolet. More studios have come on board. HDX and 3D (some cases) streaming. In some cases you can pre-order the digital copy for less than the physical copy (finally).

The license restrictions are WAY less than they were years ago, a year ago, six months ago and MUCH less than physical. I can now bring up a movie on the go, at home, at work, at friends on most any devices.

Is it perfect heck no, am I thrilled nope, but is it getting better pretty fast and I love it much better than 2, 5, 10 years ago. It's silly, but we voice our concerns, we vote with our money, and we move on.
