    New...

Just ordered my vudu box should be here on wed.. Looks like a great product. I wish it had an IR remote but I assume I should be able to program it just fine with the RF harmony 890 remote. I would of loved an IR remote mainly because I wanted to hook it up to my slingbox and be able to control it via the slingbox so I could watch movie virtually everywhere.

But I assume a download bandwidth of 20mbps is more than adequate for instant viewing.

I'm not sure about the remote but your bandwidth is beyond fine. You only need a consistent 2.0 mb/sec for instant play. Where do you live that you can get 20 mb/sec?

This is a feature that we will release soon to production boxes.

You will be able to control your vudu box through a tcp connection using xml commands.

I'm working on releasing the specs and sample code. But the feature won't work until the next software release.

      Stay tuned...

      Hagen.

Phx. AZ. Rated at 12mbps but has the ability to get 50% more speed if its available, I regularly test at 20-23mbps.

I've seen 18-24 on my Comcast cable modem even though I'm supposed to only be getting 8. It sounds similar.

That is their PowerBoost technology. I only maintains that speed as long as bandwidth is available. Here is a link:

Well, I think it maintains it for about the first 15 to 20 MB of a file. I've seen that behavior very consistent. If it was bandwidth dependent, you'd see that move around a lot.

I just read this and realized, I needed to comment:

No, you will not be able to use the Harmony 890 with the Vudu. The Harmony 890 is indeed wireless but only to the Harmony box on the other end. The commands issued by the receiver still are converted into IR to control the individual components. I do not believe that the Harmony can send RF commands to RF remote receivers in components. It would not be impossible to build such a device but it would be somewhat difficult as there are so many possible frequencies, and codes available for all the different devices. The cost would probably be prohibitive.

Also, I don't think Vudu has released the RF specs anyhow...

Could that be why Vudu constantly gives my Comcast network a yellow rating saying it's unstable? Everytime I test the speed, it's well above 2 Mbps but it varies between 10+ to 4Mbps? I hope Vudu ignores fluctuations that are above 2-3 Mbps ...

No. The Vudu streams SD content at just over 2 Mbps. And I'm guessing HD content will stream somewhere between 4 and 5 Mbps when that becomes available.

The Powerboost has nothing to do with the yellow status you see.

Do you have QoS set on your router? If you do, what priority does the Vudu have? I had a setting too low the other night that was giving me yellow status. I'd accidentally set it to bulk which the Vudu doesn't like when you have a lot of other upstream traffic going on...

Yes, that is my experience as well.
I think they use a simple token bucket algorithm: they refill the bucket at the rate that your service says it should be refilled (i.e. @ 8 Mbps for instance), but the bucket starts off pre-filled in such a way that you can consume a lot of tokens instantly (thus allowing for a spike in bandwidth use from the user). Once you've emptied it with the initial burst, the refill rate determines your shaping.

                        Right, Greg,

And one could actually develop an upload or download algorithm that downloads in chunks, waits a short time and then starts over again. You could thereby get a MUCH faster average data rate. My max download speed I've seen is about 25 Mb/sec while after Powerboost goes away, I get my advertised 8 Mb/sec. Upload, I get around 2.5 Mb/sec as opposed to my normal 1 Mb/sec.

Problem with doing this though is that it will mess up your QoS if you have it established on your router. It's not a problem on the downlink, but on the uplink, if you have QoS set to the maximum uplink under Powerboost, you'll never get the benefits of QoS once your line is throttled back. And conversely, if you set the QoS on your upload to the level it should be (in my case about 950 kbps), you never get to take advantage of Powerboost on the upload...

                          Re: New...

Actually Comcast goes beyond the normal token bucket model. They have "Segment" weighting algorithm. So its not just the number of tokens in your bucket its also weighs the current segment utilization and determines if you can use the token. If the segment is over allocated they wont take the tokens away. Unlike some Wireless and Satellite providers that are out there that will empty the bucket no matter what the saturation point is.

Got my box today.. Stuff plays instantly..

Showed it to a few people... Everyone thinks its neat... Then they ask how much and the $399 price just turns them away.. Vudu needs to bring the price down to $299 which is more inline with apple tv's base.

Price points are amazing things and it's funny how the psyche works with them. These same people shun $399 but drop the price by a mere $50 and they probably would find that acceptable. Raise the price $1 to $400 and you'd probably see an even more negative reaction.

I've paid $399 or so for a pair of shoes (Ferragamo's - and if you ever try a pair on, you'd know why I bought them - 2 pairs actually), and I'd pay that much again as I saw great value in them. These same people that cringe at $399 for this box with all the parts and so forth inside have probably spent $400 for an outfit of clothing and not thought about it - and it's just fabric and thread.

The way we assign value to things and the way we assign price points in our heads is simply amazing to me. A player box like this is supposed to be very cheap in nearly everyone's mind. So at $400 it's too expensive. Yet, people pay $300 to $400 every day for fancy integrated remote controls that don't have half the sophistication of this box. And they don't consider that too expensive! Or people pay $300 for a Roku or Squeezebox network music player but $100 more for a device that plays video is too much.

So it's amazing how we all collectively come to these conclusions of value and price.

I agree that long term the Vudu is going to need to come down in price to around $200 and I bet that it will. But it's still interesting to watch how we make these determinations of what something should or should not cost...
