    Would love to see all the 3D VUDU wants to throw at us. I'm a huge 3D fan.

    We saw Journey in 3D in the theaters (btw, 3D effects are good in beginning and end but kind of lacking in middle) and they gave you some nice glasses (not the cheap, cheesy paper ones) as part of the admission price.

    Right now in this area some Regal Cinemas are showing Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas in 3D and glasses are included there too. Seems like the best way to get glasses.

    Going to try those glasses with the Amityville 3D tonight.

    On one of the pay movie channels, don't remember which, they were showing Jaws 3D -- but not in 3D. Lame. Hope that's not what's happening with Amityville 3D. If it's marked/titled "3D" it should be broadcast in 3D or clearly state that in the description that it's not being broadcast in 3D.

      I just heard on the news today that the upcoming Oakland Raiders/San Diego Chargers game will be shown in 3D at compatible theaters nationwide.

      I'm starting to see a trend where theaters (including IMAX) are using 3D as a way to discriminate themselves from Home Theater to up sales by offering something that TVs are unable to reproduce.

      I've looked into this a little and what I came away with is that movie theaters are beginning to use special equipment to project movies using a polarizing technique to view 3D (as opposed to the old color filter technique).

      So you still need to use glasses but they're more like special polarizing sunglasses instead of the old red/green ones. This provides superior color reproduction where the old way could only reproduce b/w or muddled colors.

      Unless you have a special monitor you cannot reproduce this polarizing image to achieve the desired 3D images at home.

      I've never been to one of these theaters, so I'm really curious how the good the quality really is. I might go to one just out of curiosity and to see the game.

      Anyway I find this an interesting endeavor.

        They've been using the same basic technique in amusement parks for many years now. All of the Disney parks, and most other big name parks, now have one or more 3-D movie experiences using those polarized glasses.

          Since you seem to spend a lot of your time at amusement parks, what do you think of the quality??

            I like it, and it keeps getting better. While the polarization method (allows full range of color) has been around for about 20 years, they have lately moved into circular polarization, which gets rid of the ghosts that plagued the first round of 3D movies.

            All you need is a projector that runs at 144 fps and a gizmo that generates the polarized image in front of the projector lens.... You can find more details by looking a 3d Glasses in wikipedia.

            P.S. I like the amusement parks as it's easier for me to blend in with the other characters...

                Yeah, Ed's right. The polarization method has been around since at least the 1980s. I think my first ever 3D movie was Jaws III 3-D. Bad movie but in a couple spots the 3D looked really good.

                Like Ed, said the problem is that the old ones were all linearly polarized, so if you tilted your head a little, it would screw up the quality of the image. Having CP would definitely help eliminate that problem.
