4k Movies - Will our collections be upgradable?

I am assuming that at some point Vudu will offer 4K movies. The question is, when movies we already own become available in the 4k format, will it be possible to upgrade them as opposed to having to rebuy them?

I think this would be very mutually beneficial. I know I won't pay full price for a 4k movie that I already have on HDX. It would also highlight the advantage of digital ownership over physical copies, the ability to upgrade them which a disc will never be able to do.

I'd be surprised it they did, since we can't upgrade from SD to HD or HDX.

I think it would be good if they did offer an upgrade. I suspect they are still working out the pricing for digital movies.

No studio wants to leave money on the table, but if they can make more with an upgrade program than they can with trying to get us to re-buy the same movies, I'd think it would be a win-win.

      Highly unlikely.

Closest thing you'll get is what Sony was doing in the early days of UltraViolet when they were only giving out SD and gave you the option of paying extra to get HD. Maybe when you buy the 4K disc or whatever you can pay extra to get the 4K streaming.

      Who knows really.

Re: 4k Movies - Will our collections be upgradable?

        Interesting question.

        The knee-jerk response is "No".

However, we have to remember that folks like Sony want to sell 4K televisions and other equipment. If the path to upgrading to 4K digital video is easy and cost effective for consumers, their customers may be more willing to go ahead with the TV upgrade.

On the flip side, Sony's UV cohorts such as WB, Paramount, Universal, Fox, etc. don't make equipment, they only sell content. It is in their best interest for the consumer to re-purchase a movie, as opposed to giving a cheaper "upgrade".

IMHO, it will all depend on how fast the studios want the uptake to occur. If they are willing to sit back and let people slowly upgrade at full price, we may never see a "upgrade to Ultra HD for only $$$" option for any of our movies. However, if they find an upgrade price point that gives them a reasonable profit, while also being palatable to the consumer, it will be a relatively short time before such an option is available.

It's also a huge investment in hardware for Vudu. The server space, processing power, and bandwidth for 4K is going to cost a literal fortune. Walmart backing or no, I don't think they have that kind of backing.

Nor did the movie studio's throw out money to help convert independent theaters from film over to digital. They simply walked away from thousands and thousands (however small individually) revenue streams.

It will cost a handsome sum to be sure, but I'm willing to bet it will be spread out over time. They will add on as demand dictates. While I expect the move from 1080 to 4K to be much quicker than the transition from 480 to 720/1080, these Ultra HD displays, especially from bigger names such as Samsung, LG, Sony, etc. are still several thousand dollars. Only your hardcore videophiles are going to drop that kind of cash. Mainstream penetration will probably occur once your name brand OEMs start putting out sub $1500 sets, and I'm not sure how long that will take.

The bandwidth will only be an issue until they perfect the compression algorithms. For anyone who has ripped blu-rays before, the raw .m2ts file can be HUGE (easily over 30gb), but services such as Vudu or Netflix obviously aren't streaming us that file, they are streaming a file maybe 1/4th the size or even smaller, while maintaining outstanding visual/sound quality for the most part.

I would say no, there is money to be made.

Having said that... I posted about 4K coming to VUDU not long ago and just about got laughed off the forums.

(Most people don't have or can afford 4K right now and the Internet speed that would be needed is still limited for many)

I'm not sure why 4K is even needed. Sure it looks better but I don't watch enough movies as it is to justify the price of the TV plus I don't know of any TV station broadcasting in 1080P. Sure there are movie channels but I can't recall ever watching Monday Night Football in 1080P (Where available). 1080P is hard enough to get right now, besides the hardcore guy with the 20K Theater room I don't see the 4K point right now. (Having said that, VUDU isn't 4K so that 20K theater room seems limited

I wouldn't hold your breath on 4K movies any time soon. That's a lot bandwidth.

I think we are going to see 4K with the UV CFF long before streaming, right now local storage and physical media is the only realistic method of deploying UltraHD en mass. The infrastructure of the internet isn't yet ready to stream that much data, not if many millions of people started streaming 4K simultaneously.

Frankly, I would prefer see the quality of the 1080p streams improved, while "HDX" is markedly better than other streaming services, it still struggles with gradients and compression artifacts, it is still a ways away from Blu-ray. We need Blu-ray quality before VUDU even thinks about stepping up to 4K. I think I would choose a perfect HD stream over a highly compressed UltraHD stream.

As to the topic, many studios are letting us upgrade 480 to 1080 for $5 through the D2D program, its conceivable that something like this may happen in the future for 4K, allowing us to upgrade our UV rights for a fee. The situation right now though is frustrating, it is ridiculous to pay full price for an SD version and then pay full price again later for the HD stream instead of just the difference, there is no excuse for why this has to happen for digitally distributed content, it all comes down to contracts and distribution rights, which are an absolute mess right now for sure.
