Usually it takes a week or two before a new DVD release becomes available on Vudu. Then it's purchase only for about 3 weeks, then it's finally available for rent. So Vudu's "instant gratification" usually takes a month - for renters ...

Those of us who like to stay on top of DVD releases still need to go to Blockbuster or use Netflix. Most of the blame can go to the studios that control the release schedules. So until that changes, Vudu appeals mostly to those folks that are in no hurry to view new DVDs ....

If I'm really in a hurry to see a movie, I see it while it is in the theaters. If I don't see it then, whether it is available a few weeks earlier or later doesn't matter much to me. The dates the studios release them is arbitrary anyway, so Vudu's release is arbitrary + a few weeks, which is still arbitrary. I have enough other things going on in my life that make it a non-issue as well.

In the "instant gratification" context claimed by Vudu, not renting DVDs for a month after they're out on DVD is a big deal ... but yeah, it's a small slice of life ...

I think it is a big deal that movies are not released on the day and date of DVD release. I rarely go to movie theaters so I wait for the DVD release and like to get them on the day or at least by the weekend they are released. Movie theaters are a bad experience for me. Most theaters do not know how to set up the sound system and with people talking and kicking your chair its an annoying time. I would much rather watch a movie at home in my theater.
DVD release dates are usually published at least two months in advance. With Netflix I can just type in the movies that are in the theaters now and add them to my que and they are delivered automatically on the day they are released.

I thought the instant gratification was pertaining to, once it's available and you decide to see it, you just have to push a button and there you go. Maybe they meant more.

I can see that and I wouldn't argue with your position. I still enjoy going to the theather though. There is something about getting out that makes it worthwhile. I realize there are others who feel the same way that you do. I wonder how many feel each way.

Also, I used to be a very impatient person by nature. I've worked on that over the years and have found that being able to be genuinely patient has made me much happier in just about everything.

I have been waiting for Spiderman 3 to be released for rent but that is not going to happen soon so I have to watch the DVD from Netflicks. Netflicks does not have the same kind of "instant gratification" but at least I know when they release the movie and when I can plan to watch it.

One odd thing I have noticed I know its probably the studios fault for not allowing vudu to do it.. But I have noticed a lot of movies only have the sequel and not the first movie or just have the first movie and no sequel.

Yeah, I think a "movie marathon" would be a great promotion, whether they can offer a package discount or not, and I've been suggesting it every so often. Although many series have one standout or one stinker, it's still kinda fun to watch them all in a row sometimes.

                        Re: movies to rent

The only reason i can figure that VuDu can't rent movies once they are released is because of existing contracts between the distributors and with corporations liek Blockbuster & Netflix. I'm sure there's some twisted clause in there somewhere that dictates that they will be the only distributors (via rental) of the movie, regardless of medium. Once VuDu gets a customer base, hopefully the distributors will start to bend.

It's no secret that NetFlix has a set-top box planned, and you can bet that they won't launch that puppy without being able to rent new DVD's through it once they are physically released.

Also, both of those corp's have to buy thousands of physical DVD's further jacking up the distributor's profit margin. With Vudu, it would only be a single, digital copy that goes out on the P2P network.

Anyway, I use both Amazon Unbox via TiVo, NetFlix, and soon Vudu. I've only rented 1-2 movies using Amazon and NetFlix is great but often you just don't feel like watching that romantic drama that was in your queue from a week ago. I truly thing that the VuDu box will appeal to every humans desire for instant gratification!

When I am looking to watch a specific genre with Netflick I just move certain movies around in the cue so that I way I can rent a sci-fi and a drama to keep my viewing experience interesting.

That sounds like it takes a lot more planning and isn't quite "instant gratificaton". Plus, sometimes you might feel like watching something that you hadn't anticipated, just because the mood strikes you. You might have company, for instance, and want to pick something that they like. That's hard to do when you have a handful of DVDs sitting there.

                              VUDU team,

Overall, I think the moderators need to do a better job of listening to visitor's opinions rather than holding sermons about how THEY like to experience movies. They would do well to remember these are potential customers and early adopters they are preaching to. The last thing they want to hear is how they need to change their viewing habits to accommodate VUDU.

I work for a large & successful national retail chain. I think can offer some insight rather forum fanboy chatter. The first mistake a new vendor often makes is try to make the customer fit your model instead of your product fitting their lifestyle. Just a suggestion, ignore it at your peril.

I suggest that forum visitors shouldn't be shy about what they want out of this product. If they have viewing needs or experiences that aren't being met, VUDU needs to adapt to be successful. Push back.
