    HD Userbase

    Hi,

I'm curious, what percentage of Vudu owners have there box plugged into a HDTV (LCD, Plasma or Projector)? I know this is tough to answer but I was hoping someone had some marketing data. I'm guessing it's in the high nineties.

I like the idea of the Vudu box and would have bought one immediately if there was an unlimited rental price plan. The fact most of the content is SD struck me as odd though, I hope this is being worked on.

I don't have the answer to your question about the statistics. However, keep in mind that even Vudu's SD (and DVDs for that matter) look better on a big widescreen HDTV than an old 4:3 TV.

Can you name a VOD service where most of the content is HD?
there isn't one. All VOD services, whether Apple, Comcast, FIOS, Xbox Live, Play station network, etc, they all have much more SD content than HD content.

aaronwt, what's driving that? Is it server space restrictions on the hosting side or are studios just not preparing HD source material quickly enough?

I don't know Vudu's budget, but I'm sure that server space shouldn't be an issue for a company as large as Apple. At the same time, I have heard a lot about licensing issues, and about studios and licensors being very skittish about releasing HD content. So unless there are some other factor we haven't thought of (very possible), my best WAG is that it's an issue with getting the movies from the studios/licensors.

I'm only slightly a picture snob - but let's just say I shell out the extra extortion fee to DirecTV in order to get my expensive football package in HD.

Unless you're REALLY a picture snob, the SD picture quality is very good. Because my HDTV is connected via component, I am limited to the 480p output. But not once had anyone looked at the VUDU picture and said "oh, it's not HD". I don't think the general public would be able to tell.

I think there are a couple reasons:

1.) Licensing - Studios reluctance since many are vested in BlueRay.
2.) Bandwidth - Most people still don't have the bandwidth necessary for viewing.
3.) Economics - Is it worth the extra bang for the buck to take the time to encode the movie in HD?

The vast majority of DVDs out there are not in HD either...

I have little time for picture snobs. I grew up watching films on VHS tapes in the eighties after all! There's a particular breed of them developing the blu ray camp who are repeated quoted as saying they wont watch a SD movie ever again. Makes me sudder to think of never being able to watch an old black and white Kurosawa classic because the source hasn't been remastered to 1080p yet... Needless to say I hold such peoples opinions on movies (in any format) quite low.

SD content on a HDTV can be hit and miss. There are some badly encoded DVDs out there and there are still lots of cable companies that have horrible mpeg2 feeds. If Vudu are doing a better job of making the 480 footage look good (via modern compression algorithms and upscaling out of the box) then more power to them.

I just think it's a own goal in a marketing sense to not have as many of those i HD and HDX from day one. The (HD) release lists posted for the last two weeks look encouraging however (30+ HDX added last Friday for example).

The SD encoding on Vudu is quite good. There are some that are really bad simply because of bad source material but in general it's very, very good quality. As good as any regular DVD out there.

Vudu uses H.264 encoding. SD content is about 1.5 to 2.0 Gigs in size, HD in the 3 Gig to 5 Gig range and HDX in the 8 to 10 Gig range.

Well I'll admit it's a very rare event for me to watch a DVD. I've only watched a few in the last 3 years.
I was up to 95% or more of my content watching was HD. But since getting the VUDU, it has been directly responsible for me watching more SD. It has increased my SD watching percentage by a few points.
I'm more inclined to watch something on VUDU in SD while watching a DVD is onlya once or twice in a Blue Moon event for me. .

Did you know the Vudu has a webcam built into it? Here's a picture of Elwaylite calibrating his TV

But seriously, have you rented any SD titles on the Vudu to see how the look?

                            Hehe.

Yeah, I rented Happening SD for my comments about Vudu on another site (just saw the Blu-ray). I thought it looked pretty good. Honestly, Ive got a 1080p tv, I paid $500 to have it professionally calibrated, I just aint interested in SD anymore. I only have HD channels in my Guide favorites for Directv, and honestly, Ive been watching Blu-ray and HD-DVD for 1.5 years, kinda hard to like anything else.

I've jumped in with 2 feet and am giving Vudu the next 6mo's for evaluation and to increase their HDX push.
