    I want: INSTANT HDX!

OK, Comcast is rolling out their DOCCIS 3.0 service packages now. I've been upgraded to 16 down and 2 up. It's actually coming out closer to 18 to 20 down and 2.5 up.

They will have 50/5 service in December but we'll have to see how much that is.

Anyhow, even 16 down should easily support instant HDX.

      WHO DOESNT!

I've been trying to avoid Comcast, hoping that Version FIOS or some other service would come along and offer higher speeds, but I may just have to give in and add cable internet to my existing DSL service so I can enjoy higher download speeds. Unfortunately I'm going to have to pay higher fee's, if I do signup, because I'm not a Comcast Cable user, but rather use DirecTV as they offer more HD content then any other TV provider, currently.

Well, I recommend Comcast Business services. If you go on Contract with it, then you pay a LOT less and not much more than residential. The flip side is if you break the contract you pay big $$$. I'm very pleased. Also, business service has no limits unlike residential.

And as for more HD, Comcast has this advertising push right now that they have more HD on at any time than DirecTV. It's a clever way they do it as they include all their OnDemand programming as well as their live channels... ;-)

But since having a TV with CableCard and now a TivoHD - I'm never going back to satellite...

But do they have more than FIOS? FIOS has over 100HD channels in many areas now(most if not all FIOS areas will have 100HD channels by the end of the year), and they have alot of HD VOD content as well. If FIOS isn't the HD leader now they will be soon.
And you can't beat their Internet speeds. I have the 50/20 tier for only $90 a month here in Northern Virginia.

I would love for VUDU to have a speed option where if you increased your download speed to make HDX instant, that your uploads speeds would increase alot as well to help feed the other users. I would have no problem with that since my upload speed is 20mbs so i have plenty to share since i rarely max out my upload bandwidth, unlike my download bandwidth where I max that 50mbs out with other devices on a regular basis.

Well, I can't comment since Verizon FiOs isn't available here. I'd probably have them if they were...

I would think it would be doable if Vudu gave us a 10mbps down tier.

IMHO though, waiting 3.5 hours on HDX aint bad.

Even though I can't take advantage of it, it'd be nice to have Instant HDX tier but it may take some time for VUDU to adjust/tweak P2P network to support that. I guess, the main limiting factor is that with almost all services upload speeds are always much less than downloads.

That's true, but now I'm wondering that if the p2p boxes you're getting your movies from are at a higher elevation than your box, does it upload or download the movie?? If elevation matters, then living at sea level would be the best place to be for optimum p2p performance!!

No no no primitive HeadHodge - everybody knows data flows faster in thinner air - with the vacuum of space being the ideal place to keep your Vudu.

Ohh...... That explains why satellite is better than cable.

                        Re: I want: INSTANT HDX!

The best part about a P2P network is that it doesn't matter if the peers are all much lower in data rate individually. It's the aggregate that matters. So you just need more peers - that's all.

Given the impressive displays at Best Buy (seriously - one near work here had 4 Vudus on display in various locations), I think the box is probably starting to really take off and therefore adding a LOT more peers to the network...

That does reduce the number of people that can simultaneously watch HDX at the same time though. If it takes 4 peers (hypothetically) to serve movies to a single viewer, then 25% of the Vudus can be watching a movie simultaneously. If it takes 10, then only 10% can be. Of course this is a simplification, but it is in the ballpark.

True. But how many boxes are sitting idle at any given time? Probably the vast majority. It's like the banking system. Banks only keep maybe 20% of their actual deposits on hand. The rest is elsewhere. If everyone wants to take their money out at once, the system collapses (as we have all seen unfortunately), but if people randomly take out as others put in, the system is solid.

Also, a box can transmit and receive at the same time. So just because a box is sending a movie does not mean that it can't receive one. Not everyone as well will watch the same movie at the same time either, so the distributive nature of the system and the randomness of user viewing habits enhances performance.
