    Just orded a Vudu box...

...I have a quick question. Is there an ethernet cable in the box and if so how long is it? I'm felling very lazy (and slightly hungover) this weekend and if I could avoid an unnecessary a trip to Fry's then all the better

Based on my router and AV setup I think I need a little over 20 feet.

If I remember correctly, the ethernet cable is 6ft long.

Oh well, I'm now 12$ lighter but have 25 ft of slack to play with so problem solved. Thanks for the replies anyway. The funny thing is you could most likely add wifi to the box for little more than $12 on the bill of materials. Not that the cable will bother me much I already have speaker cables and guitar cables running back and forth anyway.

There's all sorts of reasons why WiFi is not the best solution for streaming video. Vudu did it the right way with the Vudu adapters where you create a wireless link between the box and the other wireless adapter. Normal WiFi is a shared medium and with a standard like 802.11g, it would be REALLY easy to get yourself in a position where you cannot sustain the speed needed to stream. If you can go wired, it's the right solution...

Well I'm pretty much set now, just have to wait for the box to be delivered! Held of on ordering either this or an Apple TV box for a long time but the gadget freak in me won out.

I think someone is going to make a killing on the download market soon. Still not sure if it's going to Vudu or a new player but this looks like it's easily the best option on the market right now.

Will post back some impressions after I've had a chance too test drive it. : )

Re: Just orded a Vudu box...

With Vudu offering HDX, they are in the best position IMHO. AppleTv and Xbox Live arent really trying to compete on the PQ end, just with quantity. I have no interest in an Apple product and have no need for a Xbox.

Netflix's service may be a competitor because of the price (vudu is a little pricey) and the fact Bluray players are getting access to it. Their biggest problem is no HD and the watch now stuff doesnt offer much right now, IMHO.

I think if Vudu continues with the HDX and HD push on all new movies and drops their price $100, itll take off even more. They definitely have made an advance buy making themselves available in Best Buy.

After owning the box for a bit, Im all for Vudu surviving, its just such a crazy time right now for movies and media, you just never know. I guess the high price of the box allows Vudu to get a decent income from the get go, which is a good thing. Plus, the people supporting the service can prob stand to take some losses for the long run. Ill be curious to see where we are at 2-3 years from now, Ill def go where the movies are, and right now Vudu appears just fine for me.

Well, it should be a fun four months burning through $200 of HD rentals at least.

Oh I agree, but at this point, I'd like to keep it. Im pretty happy with the PQ and AQ, but in the end its all about the movies.

You really have to look at how far Vudu has come in the last 12 months.

                            Last year at this time:

                            - No HD
                            - No TV shows
                            - No IR Control
                            - No Extended Rental
                            - No 48 hour viewing limit on indie films
                            - No Archive/Delete function
                            - Lots of titles but most off beat - not a large number of "current" movies

I could go on. The box has come incredibly far in 1 year. Oh and the price did go down $100. It was $400 when it was first launched...

More good stuff to come too as I understand it (course, I know NOTHING).
