Movie Ratings (start ratings, not MPAA)

I'm pretty sure this has been mentioned before but I just have to bring it up again. I really, really, really think that Vudu should consider doing something different with the movie ratings. They are almost always WAY off. I'm not sure where they are getting the ratings from but I've only watched a handful of movies that I felt was in line with the rating.

I know that true movie critic ratings can often be horribly out of touch with the average movie watching Joe so I'm sure this has something to do with it.

Case in point - I watched Redbelt last night and I'm sorry but that was a HORRIBLE movie. OK, maybe "horrible" is too strong. It did have a few good moments but in general it was pathetic. The Savages - also pretty rough. I could on and on but you get my point.

    Here's what I suggest:

First prize - pull the ratings from IMDB.com. If it isn't available there then have an alternate and then note the rating source.

Second price - keep the same horrible ratings but allow for user ratings as well OR also pull in IMDB ratings as those are typically more accurate than most other rating systems out there.

I full realize that ratings are subjective in nature and no rating system is ever going to magically agree with ever single person's viewpoint but the current ratings are pure junk. IMHO

There might be licensing issues with imbd or similar sites. I think some kind of deal should be reached with either imdb or maybe All Movies database to allow a full media browser. This could even list films not yet on vudu if you search for say a director with a request link (to help gauge demand for older titles).

Vudu gets its info mainly from AllMovies.

Strange to hear about Redbelt. Ive not watched it yet, but it did well on Rotten Tomatoes, and thats usually who I look at for scores (critics AND users)

I find that Rotten Tomatoes is the most useful also....

User ratings would be nice especially if VUDU could set it up to feed the data to the ratings service so our ratings would count.

P.S. Was Redbelt really that bad? David Mamet is an awesome director -- "Heist" is one of my all-time favorite movies.

Other than the writing, one of those movies where they make the actors state something, then they state it again almost immediately (gets kinda annoying to me), it was enjoyable. Ending is too abrupt though.

the only thing I look at for the movies is the list of most watched on the VUDU box. Otherwise I don't look at any ratings.

I've recently found this to be of value as well. I think it could be augmented with a user review system though. That way you'll know if a movie is highly rated (by users) and in the "most watched" category that it has a chance of being very good.

For me... yes - it was that bad. I agree that David Mamet is an exceptional director but this one was a flop for me. It was very slow to develop and then when it finally got some substance it pretty much ended. The dialog was pretty poor as well.

                        Agree 100%.

This is honestly why Ive quite going to movies and will gladly drop the $5.99 at home. My wife still complains, but I explained to her that we both enjoy movies, you gotta take the good with the bad. For the prive vs PQ, I cant complain if I get a crappy movie for $6.

Since I had already rented Redbelt before I read all the negative feedback, I decided get hammered last night and watch it.

It was 98% drama and 2% action.

As a drama, I found it uplifting in a very depressing way.

I gave this movie a thumbdown.

I recommend Starship Troopers for HDX human vs bug action and good clean killing.

Hodge...I thought they used your avatar as a model for the brain bug in Starship Troopers but audiences found it so appalling then had to change it.
