    Parental Control HELP!

So I am a newbie here with vudu....

I have read and read and CAN NOT find parental control.....

One place said go to "my vudu" and go to "settings" I didn't see that I only saw my movies....

If someone could please give me step by step to set up parental controls I would be ever so grateful.

Also, within parental control, can I set it up to require a password or a pin for purshases?

    Thank you so much

Yes. We believe that parental controls are a very important aspect of our service. After setting a passcode, parents can place limits on childrens' ability to browse, rent, buy, and/or play movies that fall within a certain rating or ratings.
Every movie in the VUDU library is labeled with its MPAA rating (Motion Picture Association of America) or labeled as ?Unrated.? With VUDU, you can also filter your movie searches by rating. You can find the parental control settings from the main VUDU menu in Info & Settings, then Parental Controls. This option is available on most versions of the VUDU app on various Blu-ray players, HDTVs, PS3 and a few others.

      Re: Parental Control HELP!

The only title that are a problem with Parental Controls are the NR rating. There are some kids movies that are NR and their are some movies that are inappropriate for children that are also NR. We also find that there are some PG-13 movies that we feel are okay for the kids and some that are not.

We would like to see something better than the MPAA rating system for parental controls because using their rating system doesn't put parents in "control". The MPAA ratings are probably okay about 70% of the time. But if we had a way to override the rating for a movie, that would be great.

Something else we don't like is that when parental control are on, all movies still show up. If we have a device set at a rating of PG then we would like it if no movies higher than PG show up in My Vudu or under Movies. I also think that it's funny how you can't type certain words on this forum, but those same words that appear in movie titles will still show on Vudu. I cannot type "Kick A-s-s", but my kids learned about that from seeing the movie title in Vudu. There are some DVD covers that we have seen when looking through movies that are also inappropriate for kids and offensive to me and my husband. So being able to filter what is shown should be a part of parental controls...otherwise we really are not in control.

That's why we have come up with a "FAM" rating on some movies that are appropriate for kids. This usually applies to content that has no rating, that way it doesn't get caught in the parental controls filter.

We didn't know anything about that. I just played around with it a little. It doesn't address our needs. There are some family movies, like The Littlest Rebel for example, that do not show up and there are other movies that do show up, like the Wolverine for example, that are NOT family movies. Not sure who determines if the movie is classified as family or not, but I stress again that it should be us...the actual parents.

This feature should optionally filter titles from even showing up in Movies or My Vudu or when doing searches.

Here's an idea... SUPERVISE YOUR KIDS! It's the logical thing to do.

              LuzRinggold,

I am double checking if PG-13 is part of the "FAM" group or not. I'll post the answer when I get it.

I know the answer to that...PG-13 is considered "FAM". Which isn't always a bad thing, but there are just as many "bad" PG-13 movies as there are "good" PG-13 movies. Same is true with NR rating.

Right, that is what we have to do for now until we find something that really works. Problem is that while we are scrolling down through a list of movies we occasionally have a movie pop up that we feel is not appropriate for one or both of our kids to see. I am not talking about watching the movie, of course that too would be inappropriate but I am talking about either the name of the movie or the image for the movie. We trust our kids and they do a great job, even with TV shows, of policing themselves. They often will turn the channel on TV shows when they see that the program is inappropriate. However, no amount of trust can prevent them from stumbling over something like the racy artwork that some titles have while searching for a movie. It's like looking around on the internet, which is why they are limited to what they can do on the internet.

Really what you are saying is that the logical thing to do is turn off Vudu and go back to 100% DVDs. That is the only way to truly have parental "control". And that is true, but I am hoping that is only true for now. I know that adequate controls can be built and I think that some day they will be provided. So I believe the logical thing to do is point out the short comings and continue requesting for something better. This new "FAM" group shows that Vudu thinks it's important. But it falls short of what is needed.

I know you've already said it, but this is a great benefit to a 'Tag' system. If tags were worked into the parental controls, for instance, only movies you tagged 'Kids' are watchable on a certain device without a passcode, that would put parents in better control.

What I meant was that I wanted to double check that PG-13 was intended to be part of the FAM group. I'm doing this as a courtesy. If you wish to be difficult with the mods here then please do so elsewhere.

What makes you say I am being "difficult"? I am not trying to be difficult, just pointing out that FAM does currently include PG-13 to save you the time. However, we would appreciate the "courtesy check" to be sure PG-13 was intended to be included.
