Holy Cow - Movie still in theaters available on Vudu!

Today I found something new and unexpected on my Vudu that is a great reason to own a Vudu - access to an HD title that is still in theaters - Splinter. Splinter is still in theaters, but you can see it right now on Vudu. Winner of Screamfest 2008 Best Picture and Best Director, Splinter is the story of a couple trapped inside a rremote gas station by a parasitic organism that attacks and changes its victims into undead hosts.

I don't personally care for such films, but this is a direction I've been pushing for for some time - having movies available for rent on Vudu at the same time they are available in the theaters. The 2-tiered rental prices are a litlle higher then usual ($7.99 HD/HDX and $6.99 for SD), but it thrills me to see this industry breakthrough. I'd definitely be willing to pay such a premium to see more of this coming down the pipeline, and I think it will happen.

For regular movies i would expect it to cost $40 or $50 if not more for them to even consider doing it. Of course the movie theaters should be against it since it would hurt their bottom line.

I've estimated similar price points in the past - still a bargain in my books vs taking the family to the theater and paying for all the accessories.

It's actually a really good film. I was presently surprised. I consider myself a very jaded viewer when it comes to horror movies but some of the scenes even made me squimish! Good sound design too, which really helps. I hope to see this added to the permanent rental catalog (at the proper rental price!) once the DVD release is out in a few months.

It's also a great move by the distributer. Films like this get such limited theatrical runs why not open it up through a VOD service. It would be good to see like this.
