Well I'll start it... Net Neutrality no longer reality :(

If you haven't read yet, a D.C. circuit court has struck FCC requirements that required providers to charge all customers equally without penalizing for data consumption volume. Word from the beltway is the Supreme Court is unlikely to consider. Netflix et al murmur about an appeal, but this judgment is probably going to stick.

At I'm guessing at least 18GB per average HDX title, what is the future, Vudu streamers? Please report new rate info to this thread (ISP name and location) and any news which is relevant.

18GB? The couple I've downloaded have been around 7-8GB.

So elaborate, you are saying that due to a D.C. ruling, VUDU is going to start charging per month. I haven't read it and this is lacking detail. Very vague

Re: Well I'll start it... Net Neutrality no longer reality

Here are some articles that help with the concept, simply put, it means the ISP's can better cap your usage and charge for the experience, may throttle usage in favor of their "own" entertainment portals, etc.... The courts have now allowed that they can do both (that is my interpretation) - Thank Verizon.

Myself, since I work at home, I am concerned regards the capping of usage & throttling of the data, my data packets are huge in my work environment, streaming video is nothing compared to the size of these data packets.

Currently ComC*a* has no caps in this market, but....give 'em an inch they will take a mile. VUDU provides the streaming content, ComC*a* or whomever your ISP is, delivers & fulfills the stream (through the highway, the internet) to the end user, they, the ISP's are now the "kickers" in this issue.

Now they have free rein to throttle the stream / charge additional fees after a certain limit of data has been reached, or for that matter, do both. I am assured they will do both to line their corporate pockets and make things difficult for streaming regardless of the purpose. This gives them a leg up on their proprietory entertainment portals, they won't charge for streaming on those, just the actual content, so, that we will all stop using NetFlix, this was the crux of the issue, NetFlix (it appears that they were losing out on content charges with NetFlix and, gasp, had to spend money to upgrade their delivery systems). Additionally it gives them a leg up to charge the actual provider, NetFlix more to use their streaming highway, along with VUDU, HULU, etc...

We the consumer become the losers, odd, sounds familiar.

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_neutrality

So....you can pay more and have smooth streaming or pay less & have buffering to the max. Supposedly Congress is taking the issue up to revert the net neutrality status quo back to "neutrality", now that the courts have ruled, given their track record......well, I will let you be the judge of that.

Thanks for great post, Muzic. In this battle, craigers, VUDU, along with Netflix & others, are the good guys just tryin' to get data to you through the ISP. Them and us (grammer ?) both get the hurt.

Well, the ruling's not all bad. The court decided that the FCC does have jurisdiction over broadband services, and they did leave in place the rule that providers had to disclose any prioritization. The main issue was more of a technicality, that the FCC has classified broadband internet as an information service, which is distinct from a common carrier service, and yet was applying rules to them as if they were common carriers. All the FCC would need to do, according to this court's decision, is reclassify broadband internet as a common carrier service. That might be a politically fraught task, but politics aside it's something the FCC can easily do.

What bothered me the most about this decision was the comment by one judge that if people didn't like the prioritization that their ISP was implementing, they could just switch! I wanted to smack some sense into them when I heard that!

Can we fire that judge! Yep, kind of hard when cable companies have a monopoly on their specific regions. I'd be all for a more competitive market where any provider can service any region.

I cut the chord back in November. If I start paying what I was paying for Dish Network then I will go back to Dish and stop the streaming. We'll also use our DVD and Blu-ray player a lot more since we have free and unlimited "streaming" from those devices!

An even worse situation given that Comcast is now negotiating to buy Time Warner Cable. Sure they don't compete in the same geographic areas, the merger though would give them free reign to impose whatever charges, caps etc they see fit, and the rest of the industry be damned.

A pretty good article on the subject for anyone interested. .

And to think I couldn't wait for TWC cable to implement TWC Maxx after their recent announcement. Wonder if this will be delayed due to the proposed merger which needs to be prevented at all costs.

I dont think people understand yet the scope of this. The media doesnt want to cover it because it benefits them, and people arent realizing that killing net neutrality is a recipe for disaster. Doing so would hurt innovation and general freedom in America and you wont be able to start a company per say like FB and TWTR as there would be greater barriers of entry.

Heres a good article about killing innovation if u wanna read about it http://www.panture.com/net-neutralit...es-innovation/
