Re: New feature request / Wishlist

Just saw this on CNET about OnLive:
    http://news.cnet.com/8301-10797_3-10...CmoreStories.0

Vudu could get in on the gaming market and unclutter my entertainment center.

You mean partner with OnLive? Don't know if that's possible since the OnLive's TV plug-in looks to have some features lacking on Vudu.

Besides the ability to use a wireless controller(USB or an adapter could solve that) it seams that the rest is just software. I'm imagining there may be similarities to how the games stream. Did I miss something, else?

The big thing though with gaming is the processor power. The Vudu uses an "all in one" chip from Broadcom at its heart. This chip is the CPU of the box, handles the decoding, uploading, downloading, etc. While it works very well for the task it is designed for, I don't know how far it could be pushed and if it could do well for gaming.

The other aspect would be memory. I think the RAM on the Vudu box is fairly limited as well and a graphic intensive game could require more memory than what is available.

Vudu certainly could do more of a gaming console via LUA and Vudu Labs, but I think the important thing is for it to do what it does best and that's serve movies....

Not to beat a dead horse, but I really think there's some synergies here...
If you look at, http://www.onlive.com/service/how_onlive_works.html. The servers do all the work while there is minimal done at the console/pc.
I would think the Vudu box can work just as well as the micro console. I was thinking this would be a great Vudu Labs, just like Pandora.

If that's the case, then there could be a good case made for Vudu to have something like this. And you are right - with the USB ports, Vudu could have a compatible USB controller that could do all the gaming functions.

              Would be quite cool.

              Thanks for pointing this out..

Re: New feature request / Wishlist

Just some quick requests, not sure if this has been asked before or whether it should go in labs.

                1) I would like the ability to connect a webcam to my Vudu box and post my own video blog/movie reviews. People could then browse how I rated movies/tv shows and see my short rundown of why.

                2) A friends list, somewhat in the same vein as boxee that allows me to chat with other Vudu owners and help setup the next feature.

                3) Group watching mode. Allow people to watch movies and tv shows with other people watching the same video at the same time, almost like a video conference with their images in a Picture-in-picture setup. That way you can still watch shows or movies with friends/loved ones while out of town or away.

I know these are not trivial additions, but I think a social networking type setup along these lines would help set Vudu apart from Tivo/AppleTv/etc.

Re: New feature request / Wishlist

                    I'd like to add "Filtering"...

I did a search and I hadn't seen any posts close to this one; if so, please post a link.

The ability to filter based on Genre. Example; anything with comedy and killing. You can get very granular with each genre; comedy action, romantic comedy, etc... Netflix subscriber, so we have a granular filter in each category; this may be too restrictive for Vudu. Give the ability to uncheck the categories I do and don't want to watch, i would be presented with a better listing of movies I would be more ap to renting/buying.

To explain if confused; this is not explore by genre, this is actually filtering content in which is sent and recieved by the vudu box. If I uncheck Documentary, i would never see 429 of these movies in the category on my box, let along to filter in the explore.

Another filter would be for movie year released: I will probably never watch a movie produced before 1975 (Im not saying I would, just example). Of course, this could go the other way and only watch movies before 1975. This feature would probably not make it, as the genre feature is more usuable, by more people.

The other is the all so famous black list: the option to block any actor or actress from showing in my list. A fine line of cursing here for some, but say I really do not like Vin Diesel or Madonna (ha, told you!) and will never watch a movie they star in period; so dont show me their films they star in.

Searching; give the option to search with filter(s) on or off.

I give the above examples for a few reasons. One is the ongoing bandwidth caps that appear to be popping up. This would help restrict what is downloaded to the box. The other is the overwhelming fact of looking at a directory of 14320 movies to comb through. If i watched a movie a day, it would take almost 40 years to watch them all, even if you didnt add any. Dont get me wrong; its like walking into a candy store, there can never be enough choices!

The downfalls that are already seen; if we all choose to filter out the content, we begin to go against what vudu's network base is created from, p2p. Less peers, longer the wait to download, etc...

The other is possibly studios will not allow the filtering because they see it as, less people will see the poster/artwork floating around, so less visible, probably less renting of unknown releases (studios think of the craziest things!)

Don't get me wrong, the above ideas are no way show stoppers for me, just something that popped in my head.

                      Sorting ability....

I'm sure this has probably been mentioned before but I would really love to be able to sort my wishlist by genre, date added, rent only, purchase only...etc. This IMO would make for a much more useful applicatiion of the wishlist function as I now have "god only knows" how many films in my wishlist and it would be great to view them and pick a movie without having to scroll through the entire list.

                          Improvements not on the way.

Why can't I sort by most viewed by day, week, month, all time?
Why can I sort by community rating by day, week, month, all time?
Does someone from Vudu read these posts? Do they do anything with the requests? Seems like this has been requested several hundred times over the past year and nada, zippo, zilch.
Vudu is cool, but if they don't continue to improve it will be outdated real soon.

Vudu has improved quite a bit and continues to do so at a rapid pace. I'm not sure it's fair to imply that they haven't because they didn't implement your highest priority feature.

I'm not sure how long you've been a customer, but if you've been around for the last 18 months or so, you'll have seen a tremendous amount of change in the service and what it does.

The community rating is a very new thing. I just came out in the last firmware release if I remember correctly. So stuff like this will come in time.

But it's also a huge deal to enable sorting a database of 15,000 movies based on a users whim.

And yes, Vudu reads these posts. If you go back and look, many of the requests in this thread have made it to features on the box.

The ability to use the Vudu To Go app to add both TV Series and Box set movies. I've had 0 luck with both even though I've verified at least some of them are UV and/or Vudu compatible (Stargate, Babylon 5, James bond box sets, etc...).
