HDX for some older movies isn't even close to HDX

    HDX for some older movies isn't even close to HDX

    Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is a perfect example of purchasing and HDX version and getting some lame Pan and Scan version with blurry color. I don't understand this really because Seven Brides For Seven Brothers is the poster child for widescreen movies and letterbox. Even the DVD release of it was widescreen with better color and clarity. Why such a crap copy on Vudu?

    Be sure to check the "Incorrect Aspect Ratio" thread for a list of movies with this issue.

    Vudu, when dealing with the studios, sometimes deals with their home video division and sometimes with their broadcast/cable division - sometimes, titles from one studio are negotiated with one unit or another because of licensing restrictions.

    So, what you're seeing are titles where the studio has provided a "pan and scan" master from their broadcast/cable division that's been put together for cable tv broadcast, not home video.

    There are a few cases where Vudu has incorrectly encoded a title in HDX format - usually these are 1.33 movies that are stretched to fill the screen or 2.35 movies that are accidentally stretched and fill the screen in the other direction. But the pan and scan issues are coming from the studios.

    I used disc to digital on about 100 older "classic" titles at Vudu and about 10% were in the wrong aspect ratio on the master provided by the studio. I'm trying to use the "2 min preview" and the thread on aspect ratios to avoid the titles with problems.

      I'd also mention that some older titles do look a little grainy in HDX format, particularly at points when the movie involves opticals (such as dissolves, titles, etc). Some older films were made on film stocks that were higher speed and grainy or an archive title might not have a master negative that survives.

      Hi-def can really bring out some of these issues, whether it's on Vudu, Blu-Ray or other formats. Sometimes, the studios will use digital tools to try and get rid of some of the grain or improve the image, but there's only so much that can be done in some cases. The recent releases of the Hitchcock flicks "Family Plot" and "Marnie" are good examples - the surviving materials just don't really look great on those titles.

      The problem with "Seven Brides" is because of the panning and scanning - it's zooming in on the picture and that's why you're seeing softness and grain.
