Vudu should partner up with Blockbuster

As we know, Netflix has agreed with XBox to download their movies on the console. I think Vudu should start working something out with Blockbuster and utilize their huge video database.

Its just a matter of time before all the video stores will close down because of online-streaming technology improved over the years.

Last I checked, the Blockbuster streaming box had a little over 2100 titles available on it. We dwarf its selection with over 12000.

Blockbuster is a dinosaur on it's way out.

It was a place of disappointment. You would walk in looking for the latest titles and they were all rented out or someone spread peanut butter on the tape and ruined your VCR.

It's a place to pick up chicks if you can stomach watching chick flicks before the Boom Chaka Laka. Otherwise stick to the local laundrymat.

Yeah, the problem is that Blockbuster doesn't have much to offer VUDU except maybe branding (like AT&T for SBC). Even if VUDU had a physical disc rental business, it still wouldn't help with the VOD licensing issues.

Re: Vudu should partner up with Blockbuster

Well, I just visited the website and bought VUDU after days of reading reviews and opinions. Bottom line seems to be no one knows who will wind the VOD battle, but VUDU has the best overall product. Just not the name of Apple, Blockbuster, or possibly Netflix (5 years ago who were they?).

But having the best product is not always the path to success. VUDU should study why Sony lost the Beta/VHS battle and subsequently won the BluRay/HD DVD battle. You have the have an equal or better product (which you do), you must have the support of studios (content providers), (which you seem to have), and lastly, get the hardware into the hands of the everyday users.

How many users depends upon your overall cost structure, etc, but general acceptance by the consuming public is the overall objective. Price is important, especially right now (which you have addressed), but knowing who and what VUDU is is equally important. Had I not visited Best Buy looking to buy new HD systems, I would not have even heard of VUDU. A bit more PR in the hands of the average person would help as well.

Thumbs up on this product! I am sure I will be happy with the purchase as soon as it arrives!

I'll second that. It's not a good business decision partnering with a company on its decline.

aggiesnlc - congrats on your new purchase!

                    TDavid -

What surprised me was that the Best Buy manager actually tried to talk me out of buying VUDU - even though they are the exclusive B & M Reseller. Comment was - A PS3 is much more functional for games and BD movies.

Had to explain to him I was not asking about games and that last time I checked, sony was not offering movie downloads. Needless to say, they would not match the online deal from VUDU, so I decided to wait a couple of days to get the product and bought directly from VUDU.

My experience is that a chain like Best Buy will try to talk you into what ever has the highest margin for them.

Yep, Best Buy employees are very hit and miss with dispensing reliable gadget/technology advice. Better off doing web research first and then going shopping.

Guess we were lucky in that we first saw VUDU at Best Buy during one of their private invite-only Rewards Zone member events and there was a Vudu sales rep there. He was pushing VUDU hard. And doing a great job of it, I might add.

I didn't need too much cajoling though, especially with the $200 in free movies BB deal (plus the bonus reward zone member points), as I'm all about buying and trying out new gadgets.

Actually, Sony does offer movie and TV show downloads through its PSN Store.

Anyway, the point is quite valid anyway -- VUDU needs to improve its name recognition and do more B&M deals. Still, it's a tough business and even being a household name doesn't guarantee profitability *cough* TiVo * cough.
