Buffering problem/1 bar during primetime but fine in the AM

I have watched Vudu with near perfect connectivity for several years. About one or two weeks ago I have developed a problem which makes it impossible for me to watch. I use a Blu-ray player to watch Vudu, directly connected to my FIOS router. During primetime hours, every movie gives me 1 bar and buffers every couple of minutes, or simply refuses to play even if downgraded to the lowest resolution. During this time, I am getting 83 mbit speed on my computer, with average 19ms pings. The issue is identical on another Blu-ray player, and streaming on my computer.

Whenever I test off hours - early or even mid-morning - it is perfect. I can stream Amazon and anything else on the player without any problem. I have been through tech support with their traceroutes and have no issues. I am now escalated to a senior network support person, but I haven't heard from them yet.

The only conclusion I can reach is that there is a bandwidth issue when multiple people are trying to access Vudu. It isn't bandwidth at FIOS (unless they are specifically choking Vudu during primetime), since I can stream Amazon, etc.

This is completely maddening, as the catalog at Vudu is so much better than elsewhere. But at this point, I can't use it.

Anyone else notice this? Any other advice?

I've had similar issues with my devices and interestingly enough also have FIOS. No problems with computer, YouTube (even 4k), NetFlix, Hulu+, Amazon Video, etc. Only an issue with Vudu.

Mine is slightly different. One bar, then full bars, then plays, then buffers. Rinse and repeat. Initially I was able to get away with switching to lower quality. Now it doesn't make a difference.

Different devices, wired, wireless doesn't make a difference.

You might have something with PrimeTime. That is when I do most of my watching and when I have most of my problems. Though I can't say thats the cause. Still need to go through traceroute this week.

I do find it interesting I only have this with Vudu. Network test on PC are perfect, Vudu speed test on any device go to full bar instantly, device network test on wireless are all full bars (wired same results). No issues on other services.

Given that Netflix has been paying ISP's I would almost say this is Verizon not playing nice with Vudu. Second guess is that Vudu is overtaxed on server end. Third and last guess is that Vudu has weird security set-up that just doesn't play nice.

I think last one is unlikely. No other security issues with other services. This includes Target Ticket which is also doing UltraViolet. Now Vudu might also have more security. But if they added new security I think we would have heard from them. It can't be existing or would have had problems before.

I think server taxing is unlikely as it would also likely have been an issue in the past and would have been documented as well.

I think this is more to do with ISP's pressing Vudu to pay for bandwidth. It's less likely something that Vudu would want to publicly come out with and since it'd REAL current news with Netflix it's also likely that the ISP would also try and play the game with other streaming services.

      My two (or five) cents.

It's not an ISP issue, it's a vudu issue. I have Time Warner turbo internet, a brand new Surfboard 6141 modem and an Asus RT-AC68U router but vudu still has constant buffering issues. The problem is most noticeable when streaming with my Roku 3, not one other streaming service has a problem and it sucks cause the movies I've purchased from vudu just sit idle because I don't want to get all bent out of shape trying to watch any of them.
There have been 4 times I've rented movies from Amazon and have received emails stating my money was being refunded because they detected playback problems and each time I've had to contact them back to let them know I've NEVER had a streaming problem with them, I've never heard from vudu.
