Anything is better than the way Netflix does it. They actually adjust your picture quality (compression) based on your down load capability.

    It really STINKS.

I think it works very well. They do it on the fly since it is streaming and the bandwidth is dynamic. So as your bandwidth decreases so does the quality, as it increases so will the quality. VUDU is putting the content on the drive for viewing while Netflix is only streaming it so there is only a certain amount in the buffer at any time. if you kept it at a constant bitrate then when the bandwidth decreases you wouldn't be able to watch it. Plus it's also being streamed off servers, so the more people accessing content at one time can also affect things.

Even with your description, I would have to say that it sounds awful. I don't want to watch a movie with varying picture quality for any reason. I want consistent, trouble free playback. Anything less can't be said to work "well", even if it is well done technically. It sounds like the classic case of solving the wrong problem.

This is where things are headed. Multiple encodes to accomodate the multiple bandwidths that people have. I think the idea is for the average user so they can quickly see apicture and you don't have the dreaded buffering screen pop up, which is what would happen if you only had one bitrate to choose from instead of the 8 or 10 encodes that Netflix has..
VUDU uses P2P so they don't have the problems of streaming from a server that Netflix has to account for.

Exactly! That's why I'd say Vudu works very well and Netflix doesn't. Vudu solved the right problem and benefits because of it. I don't want excuses. I want results.

I must say that I also don't understand why Netflix doesn't give an OPTION to buffer longer but playback at the highest level.

At any rate, faster downloads/uploads have been brought up before and I'm reasonably certain that if it's feasible, VUDU guys are looking into it.

One thing to keep in mind though -- when VUDU went from "Instant SD" to "Instant HD", the few available HD movies (i.e. Bourne flicks) still couldn't be streamed because of the way they were encoded (or something like that).
