For all practical purposes the answer is no they will never expire.

Of course that assumes that Vudu and/or the UltraViolet service stays in business. As with any business there is some remote chance that the whole thing will crash and burn, however given who is backing this it is fairly remote.

No. Look at this site and scroll all the way to the bottom of the page:

Re: will my 28 ultraviolet movies ever expire?

The best answer..."Possibly" What do I mean? Well, expire might not be the best word to use, but if the production company decides to pull the licensing agreement with VUDU for a permanent or temporary period of time, any movie that you have can be effected. If a movie is no longer available in your library, you will not receive a refund and may have to revisit VUDU and purchase it directly from the site. We have found that some movies that we would have paid to put disc to digital we could not because VUDU was "in the red" meaning the movie is available to rent or buy from VUDU but not for digital upload. The other scenario is that you can not buy it on VUDU, you can only rent it and you will be told that it is "in the black."

So, they may never go away, but they might and you won't know what movies will disappear until they do and you won't know when they will reappear, if they will reappear until they do.

Basically it is like iTunes. Anything you think you are purchasing on iTunes is actually, according to Apple, just a rental. Should you pass away, you may not allow anyone to take over your iTunes lirary as you are actually just paying to rent the items that you think you are buying. VUDU works the same way!

        Hope this helps a little...

Actually, I have had stuff I own on Vudu go "out of window" when they have been shown on premium cable movie channels, and while I can't find them via browsing/searching movies for sale on Vudu, they have stayed in "My Movies" and I have been able to watch them there. I've never heard of stuff being removed from someone's library except that I believe a few encodes don't work on specific devices like Rokus.

When you purchase a movie or convert a DVD, have you ever read anything that tells you that your movie will expire? I have not. It's my understanding that I own the movies and I can freely watch them for life.

The day that UV retailers start expiring or preventing access to our digital locker is the day that UV dies. What good would it be to invest in UV by purchasing digital copies that have time limits tied to them? Why would anyone want to spend the same amount of money (or more in some cases) for a digital copy that will expire when they can buy the DVD or Blu-ray that will never expire?

UV does not expire and when you own the movie then it's available to you even when it's "out of window".

Re: will my 28 ultraviolet movies ever expire?

Basically, your licenses in your UV locker do not expire, yet they are not officially transferable. I'm fairly certain UV will never charge you directly to access your locker, however, content providers may charge you to serve the actual content after the initial 1-year (IIRC) guaranteed free streaming period. It is unclear to the consumer whether the content providers pay a fee each time they access one of your licenses, if they do not, providers which have EST programs are unlikely to charge you to stream your library content, with the hope that you will make direct purchases through their EST system.
