It depends if Vudu's objective was the further the cause of UltraViolet or to make themselves look more attractive than other UV retailers by having MGM titles that could be redeemed on only their site. If the later, then it would have made more sense to negotiate disc-to-digital in addition to having new titles with redemption codes.

Re: New MGM titles with vudu codes

I wish I had not already bought Dances with Wolves, The Princess Bride, Rocky, The Silence of the Lambs, Spaceballs, and Platoon on Blu-ray.

I did buy the new MGM releases of The Terminator and West Side Story and am happy to have them on Vudu. I have to really decide if having a Vudu copy of the above titles is worth it, though I do get them at reduced prices (for a limited time) because I bought the other two titles on Blu-ray. I've bought many of those twice already though (via DVD and Blu-ray).

Re: New MGM titles with vudu codes

Does one Vudu 50% off code allow for just one movie to be purchased at a discount or multiple movies? Im looking at upgrading 4 movies to hdx that I had previously purchased in sd and didn't know if I had to buy 2 bluray titles to get 2 digital copies for the discounted price or if I could buy one movie and get the 3 additional titles at the discount.

The coupon is good for any or all of the ten movies. You don't even have to buy them all at once. I think the discount is good until 9/14. The discounted price will show until then (assuming you're signed in).

No, these aren't showing up as eligible for the $8 deal. It appears that not all of the new MGM Blu-rays with the Vudu codes are available for the $8 sale. Spaceballs, The Usual Suspects, Road House, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang are also not available for the sale.

Agreed. The issue with the 'make themselves look more attractive' is of course that weakens the still young UV as it further confuses consumers and weakens the value prop of UV overall. If Walmart, the biggest hammer in the room, spent effort forcing UV instead of Walmart exclusive digital copy I suspect we'd see the titles being UV. Refuse to support non UV titles and it really goes a long ways.
Exclusives could still be had with exclusive covers and other differentiators, things that wouldn't confuse customers and hurt the UV efforts.

Re: New MGM titles with vudu codes

I refuse to buy anything that isn't UV. I have in the past, from studios that support UV, because I knew they would get UV status in the future, and most of them have. But I won't buy anything from MGM or Disney, because I don't know if it will get UV status anytime soon. There's about 20 titles from MGM that I would buy very soon if they did support UV.

Here's another theory. Maybe the MGM with vudu codes are wal-mart exclusives for a few months, and will be opened up to UV when the exclusivity runs out. Just a hope.

I sort of have the same philosophy about only buying UV titles. But I have found myself buying some Vudu only titles to support our favorite retailer. Typically only Disney or MGM though. This practice really started back when we got credits and I used it to buy some Disney titles so we would have a few of our favorites in the cloud. Anytime I get a credit in the future I will use it to apply towards the purchase of a Disney title, but I ain't going to buy any digital movie for more than $20.

Re: New MGM titles with vudu codes

Most of the titles appear to be available on Blu-Ray or DVD.

Can someone please confirm the Blu-Ray is HDX and likewise is the DVD HDX as well or SD?

I understand this might vary by title but if the DVD version is HDX I see no point in getting the Blu-Ray version if all I want is the HDX digital copy. Likewise if all the versions are SD thats also a reason to not get the Blu-Ray.
