    Is VuDu Portable?

Is it possible, that you could (carefully of course because of the HD) transport your VuDu to a friends house, and simply plug it in to his system and router and watch films on your account?

If so, that is a rather cool property.

The small size and limited number of connections, make this a pretty doable thing (again as long as it is not jostled around during transport)

Anyone know if this will work?

    Yes it will work.

    2 things to think about:

    1) if your friend has a different type of connection from what you have at home, the VUDU box will be "learning" about his/her connection as if it was yours, so it may make it become too optimistic or pessimistic about networking conditions.
If you notice that the box has learned too much about this temporary connection when you take it back home, you can reset its "memory" via the user interface. Then you should give it some time to relearn your connection to make accurate predictions again.

    2) if you are unsure about your friend's connectivity and know beforehand what you want to watch (this is a restricted case and I _do_ understand it may not apply - but want to throw it out as a possibility), you can preload the movie at home (even a rental). As long as you don't start watching it, the 24/48h countdown won't start, so you can take your box wherever you want and start watching (if the movie is fully downloaded, you don't even need an internet connection to watch).

    Hope this helps.

      Thanks Greg,

      That is actually pretty cool.

It could offer a lot of possibilities for those who like to enjoy each others films.

Rather than hauling your DVD collection to a friends House, the VuDu will do.

HDMI, a digital sound, and a router cable (and AC) have you covered.

3 connections and you're off to the movies, with the whole VuDu Film collection.

      Good deal

Is there a way to tell if the movie is fully downloaded before watching?

When you browse through your "My Movies" collection there is a message indicating that the movie download is completed (vs. currently downloading or queued for download).

Assuming that you own the movies, you would never need a network connection at your friends' house. If you are talking about renting, you should probably talk your friend into getting their own box (or get them one for Christmas). Then you wouldn't need to bring your box at all.

Heck, event renting the movies is OK if you haven't started watching them yet ...

My point was that your friend might like having a box of their own, and the more Vudu boxes there are being used, the more likely the studios are to see the value in VOD.

                    Re: Is VuDu Portable?

Vudu also uses an external 12V power supply. You could theoretically use a cigarette lighter adapter in your car and then hook the Vudu up to your cars entertainment system and Vudu portably. Just make sure it's somewhat "shock absorbed."

                      Re: Is VuDu Portable?

I would not recommend using the VUDU in a moving vehicle. Unless the hard drive is rated for vibration and shock isolated it can be damaged. A vehicle travailing down the road at 65 miles on hour can easily exceed vibration range based on the quality of the road along with the suspension of the vehicle. also you hit a good bump in the road and you could have a head crash and that would not be covered under the VUDU warranty.

Most desktop hard drives publish their specifications for vibration and g shock. Here is one from Western Digital 250 GB Caviar:

                      Vibration
                      Operating
                      Linear 20-300 Hz, 0.75G (0 to peak)
                      Random 10-300 Hz, 0.004 g? / Hz

                      Shock
Operating Shock (Read) 65G, 2 ms

Nope, this isn't the case for me. Whether I select "Watch Later" or "Watch Now" - there's no indication about the download progress in any of the screens I can see. The only way I can tell when a movie is completely done is by starting to watch the movie and looking at the progress bar. This of course starts the viewing window, which may not be good in those situations where you're waiting for some movies to download before taking it on a trip somewhere but may not want to watch it within the next 24 hours.

I've also requested a download progress indicator, but that's understandably a "C-list" kind of improvement. However, it should say "Downloaded" under the poster once it's completely downloaded. Once my daughter has finished watching Sesame Street I'll try to get a screen shot.
