    Universal Monsters Blu-Rays re-release 9/2/14

On 9/2/14 Universal is releasing many of their Universal Monster films on Blu-Ray, now with Digital HD codes.

As reported on the 'Incorrect Aspect ratio' thread, several of the Universal Monster films are in the incorrect Aspect Ratio. (To be honest 'horribly mangled and unwatchable' is the more appropriate way of putting it). Frankenstein, Creature From the Black Lagoon, and The Mummy are all stretched to 16 x 9 making the entire picture look like a fun-house mirror.

With the new Digital HD/Ultraviolet codes included in these discs next month, is it reasonable to believe that the aspect ratio will finally be fixed? There is a pretty big difference between cropping a wider image to 16 x 9, and stretching a smaller image to 16 x 9. I'm no fan of cropping, but at least the picture still looks normal. Stretching a picture makes it downright unwatchable because the characters no longer appear human. They appear (as stated before) to be fun house mirror images.

    Anyone?

Do I even dare to dream that this will be corrected?

This belongs in the aspect-ratio thread. However, your post is inconsistent: Are the 9/2 re-releases gonna be with or without UV codes???

I totally disagree that this belongs in the aspect ratio thread. That is a thread about incorrect aspect ratios. This is a thread about a major Blu-ray rerelease with UV codes and a question as to how those UV codes will impact the current (incorrect) aspect ratio. If I felt it belonged in the other thread, I'd have put it there but seeing as it's a new thing, it really does not belong there.

And Yes, the new discs being released on 9/2 do indeed come with UV codes. That is the whole point of the thread. How is that even remotely inconsistent ?

It is inconsistent due to the quoted text.

I guess no one's heard anything on this yet

I guess we'll find out in September.

It would have helped if you had explained yourself further. On one line you said the 9/2 releases would not have DHD/UV codes, then on the next line you said they will have them.

From what I gather, you are asking if the UV codes included with the re-releases will fix the current aspect ratio problems with the current digital copies.

Generally speaking, the re-release or even initial release of a bluray, to my knowledge, does not mean a "new" digital copy will also be released. The only exception is when the movie is completely brand new to both blu-ray and digital.

The retailer, VUDU in this case, needs to reach out to the studio for an encode that fixes the "issues" with the digital copy.

While the scenario you hope for is possible, I wouldn't bank on it.

Sadly, it has NOT been fixed It's very upsetting. Here we have an instance of the Standard Def picture looking far superior to the HDX picture due to a distortion of the image

I would also love to see these fixed. I was holding out hope that with these new re-releases, that they would be.

It's annoying to have to do this, but you could change the aspect ratio on your TV when playing those stretched Universal Monsters movies in HDX format. I'd much rather they fixed the problem, but just about any new TV can change the aspect ratio setting. I have many of the Universal Monster movies on Vudu and I watch in HDX and then adjust my TV's aspect ratio.

I was hopeful that this release would lead to the Lon Chaney and Claude Rains versions of The Phantom of the Opera becoming eligible for D2D. The Claude Rains version was recently added to Vudu and it is UV, but it has not yet been added to D2D. I did not buy this new Universal Monsters set because I bought a previous version. If I remember correctly, all of the other movies included were D2D eligible except for these two versions of The Phantom of the Opera and the Spanish version of Dracula.

As a FYI, I just ordered the "The Classic Monsters -The Essential Collection" Blu-ray set and they didn't update that version with any UV codes in the new releases and 'shockingly' they still don't work via D2D even though 6 of the 8 are said to be D2D supported (and all are UV supported).

I wonder if the Universal Monster issue can be fixed in-house at Vudu rather than needing a new file. Unlike many Aspect Ratio problems, this is not an issue of a film image being cut, but of it being stretched. I wonder if there is an option on Vudu's end to set the film to stream at 4:3.

The image is correct, it's just the ratio it's displaying at that it wrong. This isn't the same as when Lego Movie was misframed. L:ego Movie's image was actually cut, so a new file was needed. Vudu literally has the while image for Frankenstein, Wolf Man, etc. They just need that image to display at 4:3.

I wrote an e-mail to Universal Home video requesting that they please replace these files ASAP. I encourage others to do the same. I used this form on the universal website:

                            http://www.universalstudios.com/cont...hp?email_id=13

I'm also digging around trying to find a phone number so that I can call someone in Universal's Home Video dept.
