    2 questions from a Newbie

    1. Is there a way to have the parental controls to default to on. Now I turn them off when my wife and I want to watch somehting, but if we forget to go back in after the movie and reset them they remain off. How do I go about setting it so that either it defaults to on when power starts up or after a period of time? It seems pointless to have the controls if they arent on anytimne someone forgets to reset them.

    2. Why is it that I can buy some movies and not rent them. I have seen a number of films that are available for sale but not rental. Many of these have been out for a while. Why is that?

    Thanks

I think there's a way to do this so you have to enter your password every time to use a protected function. I'll need to test a few things to be sure - I'll get back to you on this one.

Ahh, the complexities of studio licensing agreements. This is always a studio decision, which can be due to a wide variety of reasons. I know that if Vudu had control over it, every title would have Rent and Sale options.

Well, you can enable "browsing" content without a password, and then require a "works one time" password to play or rent/buy. I'm guessing you don't want to do it that way, as the concept you've suggested does make sense.

I am confused by what you are stating here. You don't have to turn off parental controls to rent/watch a movie via the partental controls settings screen. Once you select a movie to rent/watch it will pop up with a screen to enter your code and you can rent/watch a movie etc.

After about 5 or 6 seconds the parental control code would be asked again if you stop watching the movie and go back to the any of the VUDU's menus.

          Am I missing something easy????

OK one down one to go. Saw the answer regarding rent/buy. Thx

Here is the scenario regarding the parental controls. We have a young son that has some developmental issues, but loves films, videos, computer etc. I want to make sure that he cannot access even the previews of an R rated movie (would prefer he not see the titles or movie jackets). The parental controls work perfect. Set what you want to be able to see and feel safe.

Now let me explain my issue and maybe it is just my newbee status. We have the parental controls set to block everything except g, PG and non rated family approved. Those are the only titles that can be seen with controls on and of course it takes a code to purchase or rent. For my wife and I to even see what films (including R NR17 and PG14) to watch we have to remove the control (as it should be) then watch a film. If either of us watch, scans lists, goes to U TUBE, whatever and forgets to turn the control back on the control is WORTHLESS. We also want to be able to allow our nanny and baby sitters to have access to the full range of movies. Add in grandparents and you have a whole lot of people who could forget to put the controls back on after using the system.

It seems easy to me to have a choice to have the system default to controls on. If the power is turned off or the box isnt used for a period of time the controls switch on. The capability is already built in. Someone mentioned in a previous thread that when controls are ON if you dont use it, it locks. Why not make that a permanent option, not force it on anyone but give it as an option. It would make it that much more family friendly to know that parental controls will be on any time the vudu is turned on or not used for 30 minutes (or 5 or 10 or whatever).

I feel like I have to be missing somehting because this seems like such a simple concept. It would be a big marketing tool for parental websites and magazines. What good are the controls if aren't in place? Parents of any kids who want the controls would want to know that it is always going to be there, not only if someone remebered to put it on.

Any help would be appreciated. I am still in my 30 day period and want to try to find a work around until they make this upgrade (or I want to see what I am missing if that is all there is)
Great product--but this might be a deal breaker.

Re: 2 questions from a Newbie

Thanks for the clarification. Yes you are right if you block content from being displayed on the VUDU screen via parental controls they only way you can see it is to turn off that control or parental controls all together.

I have the same issue as you with young kids. But instead of turning off all the parental controls when I want to see the movie placards I just turn off the option that blocks them in parental controls and then turn them back on again. This keeps some sanity since the other controls prevent viewing/renting of content.

I agree that there needs to be some type of "Timer" that you can set in parental controls that say: "Disabled but re-enable in X hours". That would be a great feature to add and I think that request may have been submitted by other community members also.

Thanks again for the clarification and enjoy your VUDU.

Re: 2 questions from a Newbie

I submitted this suggestion as a Feature Reuqest in the beta system. That's no guarantee we'll get the feature, but Vudu has a great history of implementing good suggestions, and this is definitely a good idea.
