Confused about relation of Ultraviolet and services like Vudu and Flixster

I thought the whole Ultraviolet thing was that the UV movies, no matter where you bought them from, were stored in the Ultraviolet locker (uvvu.com). That's why you have to link your UV account to Vudu, Flixster, CinemaNow, etc..

So if that is the case, why do different services have different versions of your movie that you can access?

Example....Flixster and Target have Rebirth of Mothra I in English, Vudu has it only in Japanese

Other times, one service will have the movie available in HD, then others only have it in SD. Not to mention that Vudu has HDX which is found nowhere else.

    Dumb question, I know..

Each provider, UV-enabled or otherwise, must negotiate with the studios for content, so there will be differences in availability. Also, since each provider has their own requirements for digital files, it adds to the complexity.

My hope is, once the CFF is finalized, each provider will have the same version.

      Thank you for the response....

My next question is..why do they even have to bother with the "uv locker" then if each provider has their own copy?

This definitely isn't they way they have been promoting UV...
I have always seen it promoted "store all your UV movies in one location and access them with any UV service"

They have a long way to go.....

It is a little odd that each UV Retailer has to separately license the content from the studio. You'd think license of videos for sale would be a separate negotiation from videos for locker users.

I've heard the same that the studios will provide the CFF files, but I'm not sure about the licensing to each UV Retailer.

Well, I definitely learned something new from this thread..lol..thank you.

I think one of these days, it would be probably in their best interest to have the Ultraviolet locker have the same copy of the movie for each service to offer, and the way the services compete against each is by what features they offer and the experience of using their front end.

Having a movie that some providers only offer it in SD, while some have it in HD, or some providers have it in English dub, while others have it in a foreign language w/ subs...all that does is to make UV look hokey...

I agree. What both you and tsken02 have said in the last couple of posts pretty much sums up my exact feelings about availability.

Unfortunately, movie licensing is just a huge mess. So much so, I'm honestly surprised the UV system works at all.

              Agreed...

of course, sometimes it doesn't .. lol

              Another example:

I noticed that Flixster's copy of 'Rebirth of Mothra I' seems to have issues where it lags....plays fine elsewhere. Though it is in Japanese w/Eng subs on Vudu...English dub everywhere else..

I'd be thrilled if my UV copy of Space Jam (literally the first movie I added in my 1300 HDX collection) would actually show up in Vudu. Seriously it's UV rated it should show in whatever service I use.

Does it appear in your UV locker? If so then it should show up on Vudu (and all other UV retailers).

Should does not mean it does

Naked Gun 33 1/3 is in my UV locker but I can not play it on Target Ticket...it shows it as being "not available".

Also, I have several movies that do not show up in the UV locker, even though they are UV and were redeemed in the same manner as others that are there.

You probably have an expired ALID for Space Jam. If you contact the retailer you own the film with, they should be able to update it for you.

Daniel this would be everyone not just me. I believe Space Jam has been one of those movies that a bunch of us have that never ever got over to Vudu. It's on my Flixster site but nowhere on Vudu. Oh and Flixster could care less what Vudu has or doesn't have. I do know that it is a UV title and should be available on all UV providers but this movie and a handful of others haven't shown up on Vudu. Collateral with Tom Cruise is another title.

                          "expired"?

This brings up an interesting question....

I thought once we redeemed a movie code or bought a movie, that we own it.

From the way this reads, if you buy a movie with Target and then Target got out of UV or just stop "updating" or renewing their license, we could lose the ability to play that movie.

                          That's scary.

I tell you, the more I read this forum the more I understand why there is so much hate towards UV in the other video forums I belong to.

+1, and I actually have Space Jam in my Vudu library (probably D2D). I thought ALIDs were how UV licenses are linked to UV providers; if they expire -- even if only for initial redemption purposes -- that only adds to the general suspicion that UV (and EST as a whole) could be just a studio scheme to do away with "owning" movies thru forced expiration. I doubt that is Vudu's (or especially Walmart's) plan, but until those sort of bugs are addressed the tinfoil hats will persist...

                              Exactly.....

It is also why I will never do away with my physical discs even after doing a D2D.

PLUS....since the TV shows you buy from Vudu are ONLY playable on Vudu, and the Bonus Features and Extras+ are ONLY playable on Vudu...

If Walmart ever closes, we stand to lose everything that made it worthwhile (including the fact that the Vudu interface is the only one not to suck)

And for the people who say "oh, that will never happen." .....

Stores go out all the time...
