    PS3 format changes

Just received an email saying that there are PS3 changes for Vudu and I noticed that one was finally disc to digital being enabled on the PS3 also redeeming UV movies via the PS3.

Haven't used the new format yet but let me guess. Disc to digital still will not be able to recognize the 20 or so discs I still have even though my laptop can clearly state the title before the movie loads yet Vudu says it can't identify the movie. The PS3 app will also not be able to recognize double sided discs. Finally if a DVD has several versions of a movie Vudu won't be able to redeem it because I bought the 10th Anniversary version of a title instead of the original DVD.

    Just guessing here.

That would be awesome if it's true, but I have searched and couldn't find any news yet. Usually they post something on their blog first.

You cannot do D2D via the PS3.

Maybe I missed it, but I'm not seeing that listed as a feature. Or maybe it's since been changed.

I think he's talking about the images at the bottom of the email, which aren't related to the UI update.
(note also this UI update is not PS3-specific and will be rolled out on most/all devices over time).

At the very bottom of the email it says three items. Insta Watch, Redeem UV and Disc to Digital. Why put that on the PS3 format update at all if it can't utilize that feature. That's almost bordering on false advertising. This page was created by Vudu to specifically tout the new features and if it's on the specifically created page for PS3 I would think that it would be a feature.

Those are just advertisements for Vudu's other services.

                    Re: PS3 format changes

Very confusing then. The ad should've just highlighted what changes are with the new format and not one general ad which the PS3 cannot perform at all. The ad specifically states the new changes for PS3 then has the misfortune to show features that the the PS3 cannot do.

                    Bad form.

You can't do InstaWatch on the PS3 for that matter -- it's only available through Walmart's SavingsCatcher app, IIRC. They're just trying to advertise their other services. It probably would have been clearer if they had visibly separated it from the PS3 update content, but I didn't get the email so I don't know how it was laid out.

                        Re: PS3 format changes

What is far worse, is that from the looks of it us PS3 owners will now not have the ability to DOWNLOAD on the app. The PS3 has been the only way some of us have been able to enjoy watching Vudu without buffering issues. Wanting to "harmonise" your UI between different devices means you are genuinely going to be dropping some of us in the process. I hope you at least follow the Apple TV model and let the player queue up the entire movie, rather than artificially limit the buffer to 1gb or so like Roku etc do.

Downloading is still supported on PS3. Was there anything in particular that gave you the impression it wasn't?

How does one get the new version? I would love to try it out. Is it just random selection?

It's being rolled out in phases to an increasing percentage of the population to make sure there aren't issues (so, not so much random as "statistical sample" ) It will eventually be rolled out to most devices.
