Re: Disney just announced linking with Google Play Account, Android App coming VERY s

Someone in this thread or a similar thread asked (asking about Vudu, not Google Play) if the movies in your DMA from iTunes would show up on Vudu when/if DMA added Vudu. Now we know they absolutely will because the movies I redeemed on iTunes in my DMA show up in my Google Play account now that I've linked them. I never doubted that we'd get all of our DMA movies when we link to new accounts, but at least we can now 100% confirm it.

I agree that VUDU DMA acceptance would be the icing on the cake but I am jumping for joy that DMA is no longer locked to the rotten Apple! It is a great day indeed!

I only tried it on Flight of the Navigator and I can reproduce this every time.
Vudu is a retailer for sure. It's not live yet, but it's there now.

My guess is two weeks with the GotG digital release.

I purchased Mulan after going through DMA and then being redirected to Vudu and I can report that Mulan has not been added to DMA as of yet. I did this because I wanted Mulan in Vudu anyway, but thought it was worth a test just in case it was added to DMA. So as of right now, even though you go through DMA to buy the title, titles are only added to Vudu if you select Vudu as an option since you're redirected to the Vudu web-site to complete the purchase. So save your money for now

A huge portion of Disney's catalogue is for rental only on vudu at the moment. It has been for quite some time. Will these be available for purchase once vudu joins with DMA?

Somebody on another forum reported speaking with DMA customer service today. He said that they confirmed that Vudu is happening, but also said that they are working on a disc-to-digital-esque program to allow us to add all our older films to our collections! I hope this is all true!

No, all you need is a Google Play account on the web. If you gave a Gmail account, you have a Google Play account. I was able to link DMA with Google Play and get the free Wreck It Ralph, all from my laptop. DMA was already linked to iTunes, so once the link was complete, all of my Disney titles showed up on both Stores.

It certainly is cool and now a rather interesting perk of Disney titles. If I buy "Toy Story" on the Google Play Store, it will now appear in my iTunes library as well, because both accounts are linked by way of DMA. No other studio's library has that unique distinction.

Ohh, how exciting. I asked them straight up and I got a boiler plate 'no' response. I have lots to convert when the time comes.

yup. First time in history that Apple Corp. blinked with relation to their signature iTunes brand. I suspect they had no choice in the matter when their most loyal partner, Disney Studios, gave them intention of their plans. I doubt they are happy about it. Being the market leader in EST sales, they have nothing to gain and everything to loose.

I like the PR-ese in this theory (e.g. "signature iTunes brand") in combination with the juiced up drama. Personally, I think this is what happened one day:

Disney: Hey Apple, we're rolling out a new digital video platform. It needs to work on most devices, but we figure we can give you an exclusive for the better part of a year and just say that we're using that time to work our technical details with the other guys. Sound good?

Apple: Sure. Let's go back to the clubhouse and smoke large bills.

Disney's need to support other devices is so obvious that I doubt there was any blinking, let alone unhappiness.

Wall Street Journal disagrees with you. They wrote a piece concerning this being the first time Apple is sharing.

                            Term they used was "unprecedented".

...but since you are on a Vudu forum mid-day, you are probably between board room meetings and have superior insight into corporate policy decision making above the tWSJ and are swooping in to criticize linguistic nuance of a forum post and providing clarity to the "actual" sequence of events, rightly placing them in the context of two four year olds talking on a soup can phone.

Right, but there's no information or even speculation there about Apple being strong-armed or unhappy, just that it's new for them. You and I are just in disagreement about the amount of angst they felt, or whether there were even discussions that gave Apple the chance to "blink". But ultimately we're just speculating.

I do think that this growth of the DMA platform should silence any predictions of Disney supporting UV any time soon.

What was interesting - and I guess I missed it if it was posted last month - was the little note that Amazon is in the process of negotiating its participation in UV. Very cool.

fair enough. I also didn't think it right to say that UV "ONLY" has 12% of the market share. Heck, carving out 12% of the market in four years is pretty damn good. Zero to twelve in four years. Future is bright, it seams to me if they continue on that trajectory.
