    Vudu Sharing

I have an existing Vudu Acct. My Brother is thinking of starting one and would link to my Library.

    Questions:

1--I am assuming he would be able to see my whole library. What happens if he decides to buy some movies on his own? Do they show up in my library so that I can watch them? If he at some point unlinks my account will he take those movies with him?

    Thanks

    Re: Vudu Sharing

he would see any UV movies that are in your account and you would see any UV movies he adds but if either of you add Disney movies or MGM or anything else that is not uv compatible then they would not be visible to the other.

      Thanks.

Now If I add somebody that already had an existing library and that person linked to my library. We would share my laibrary only? Anything that the person purchased before the link would not be shared?

        Re: Vudu Sharing

no, you would see their previous purchases too. They would be joining your Ultraviolet library, so anything UV enabled in either library would be shared. They would need to unlink from their current UV library and join yours.

Oh and then if they ever unlink from my library and go back to their own will they lose all their purchases while they were linked with me or would they take everything they bought previous to linking to me and while they were linked to me?? Thanks

While linked to your account, any purchases they make would be deposited into your account. If, in the future, they unlink from your account, any purchases they made would still be in your account, and not in their original account.

That's not quite correct. If you add someone with an existing UV library to your library, they will lose their existing UV movies while they are linked to your library. Their movies purchased or redeemed on vudu will stay in their vudu account, but any UV movies purchased or redeemed elsewhere will be not be shared, and they will disappear from their account. Unless you merge their library with yours.

When you do a merge does the other account need to be unlinked from the providers, or will that happen automatically because the old UV account will no longer exist?

                  Re: Vudu Sharing

You don't need to do anything. The second account will become a member of the first account, and it will stay linked, so both accounts will have all movies.

This sharing is all way too complicated so I don't share with friends/family and they don't share with me. They come over to my house to watch if they want.

VUDU has made sharing really easy. My brother in-law just joined and all I had to do was put his email in the shared my movies tab and he signed up and it was pretty quick and easy.

I think it gets more complicated when you have to join two different libraries, but I've done that too and it didn't take too much effort.

I'd hardly call it "really easy." It's gotten better and I'm glad the sharing option even exists, but it's still more complicated than it should be, considering what Ultraviolet (and by extension, VUDU) is trying to accomplish here, in my opinion. I'm guessing that shareability really isn't their top priority, or they don't want to make it "TOO easy..." if you catch my drift.

That said, sharing libraries is really only "easy" if you are the primary user with a sizable library and you invite new people to share -- people who are just starting out with a brand new UV collection and VUDU account. Because if they already have an account, and they already have a library, you have to create a new account (as a sub-account to yours) and then "merge" their old library with yours. But seriously, who would want to do that, if they already had a sizable library of THEIR own? Especially given the knowledge that if they ever were to be removed as a sub-account from the main, shared, master account that is yours, they'd lose all of their UV movies?

I'm now speaking from experience as I am sharing my library with 5 other family members. Initially I thought sharing would work differently, and that each of us would be able to maintain distinct UV libraries just as we can maintain distinct VUDU logins. But it doesn't work that way.

In this sense, what I've learned is that the sharing setup isn't reciprocal, as I thought/hoped it would be. I was hoping that any UV titles they had (regardless of how they got them, or what service/code they redeemed them with) would stay theirs, and mine would stay mine, but when we're linked via a sharing setup, that we have one shared collection that is a combination of both. But that's not the case. All they're essentially doing is contributing to my library, and they have access to the collection, as a sub-account, that could be removed later. The only way they'd keep their titles, as far as I know, is if they added them specifically via VUDU (with a code, via D2D, or straight-up purchase.)

And so here's a hypothetical: I have ~400 movies and so does my buddy, he's got a different set of ~400. At this point, teaming up and sharing sounds great... on the surface. Together we'd have a library of 800 movies. But there's the concern at the back of my (and his!) mind, that this could be a dangerous proposition. It effectively forces us to choose, which one of us gets control of the master library. Why would he merge his library with mine, effectively giving up control of the digital movie library he's built? Why would I? Yes, the appeal of a collected library of ~800 titles sounds nice, but the question of whose library it's now become, poses a bit of a quandary.

I'm thinking ahead to the day when many of us have thousands of movies, tens of thousands... representing a sizable collection and investment. Divorces and deaths and whatever else are inevitable, and with a library linked to one master admin, those titles could very get locked in limbo.

Anyway, just food for thought. I love that I can share my library with my family, but I've often thought about saving one spot for a friend with an equally big collection as mine. But I just don't think UV/VUDU's current system in place for that makes it very feasible.

                            Re: Vudu Sharing

I'm not really sure how the "new" sharing works. Actually not really sure how the "old" sharing worked. I do know that I have an account with both Vudu and UVVU. I created sub accounts for my kids in UVVU. I then created accounts in Vudu for them. I linked the individual Vudu accounts to the individual sub accounts in UVVU. They have access to all my UV enabled movies. They have added a movie here or there. I do know that when we had the little mishap that unlinked the accounts, when they went to watch a movie, all they saw was what they had redeemed/bought. Nothing else. I still showed all the movies in my account (as far as I know). After relinking their accounts, all UV movies showed up again. Obviously, none of my Disney stuff was or is available to them but everything else was.

Like I said in the beginning, I don't know if the "new" sharing works like the "old" so I can't say what would happen should the account become unlinked.

I have my account linked with my sister's, but when I try to share with my father, it will not allow me to share. Is that because I am linked with my sister's, is there a way I can share my movies with my father? Some reason the option isn't even showing for me.
