This was reproduced on Shield (seems to work on all other devices tried) and we are investigating.

Maybe it is related to the Shield Vudu app issue of all titles playing back at a video level that is too dark, while casting the same title to the Shield produces the proper video level. The Shield's Vudu app needs work!

We are working with Nvidia to investigate the Downsizing playback issue.

We are also looking into the "dark video" issue reported, but have not reproduced it yet. It's likely some interaction between the Shield and very specific TV models and/or TV settings when outputting to an HDR10-capable TV.

I am using a Philips 49" Class 4K Ultra HD Smart TV - 49PFL7900/F7 (which is not HDR capable) if that helps at all. Along with the dark video, I am also experiencing connection issues that I KNOW is only related to the new vudu app, not my network or my nvidia shield. Everything worked great before we got the native android app.

                Thanks for the ongoing support.

It is definitely NOT related to Shield output settings OR TV models that are HDR10 capable.

                    How do I know this?

First, because I've tried every HDMI output setting on the Shield, as stated, and NO OTHER APP has this problem - in any HDMI / output mode. All video modes - take your pick - work fine with Netflix, Amazon, Google Play. Fire up the Vudu app, and you've got video that is darker than it should be.

To your second point about outputting into HDR-10 capable TVs - This isn't it either because I have an HDFury Integral, which I can set to tell the Shield (via EDID) that it is connected to an SDR only display, and HDR display, a 1080p display, a 4K SDR only, 4K with HDR; basically anything.

In fact, a setting I frequently use is 1080/24 SDR. So the Shield thinks it's connected to a 1080p SDR TV in this case.

No setting imaginable address the Vudu video level being slightly dark. Bypassing the HDfury completely doesn't fix the issue.

Also remember I can tell you with certainty that the issue is there on my JVC projector, with or without the HDFury box manipulating EDID data, and also on a Sony 4K TV. I'm sure it will manifest on ANY tv.

I think part of the issue is because I think if you take a casual look, many viewers would probably say "I pressed play, I see the movie. It's all great...". Well it plays, yes - it "works". But most people don't buy UHD versions of movies, or spend extra on a higher-end device like the Shield if they don't care about the proper output of the video stream.

The video is a solid 20% dimmer than it should be.

If you can't see the problem, try a decent camera set on manual shutter speed, aperture and ISO and play a movie from the Vudu app and then the same one from the Google app, and take a picture of each one during the same scene. You'll get the same results I've posted here and various other places Vudu users read around the net.

It would be great to get an acknowledgment that this is an issue. Nvidia acknowledged it was an issue, but just not THEIR issue. They say it's an App / Vudu issue.

                    Thank you.

Jake, I'd love to be able to watch this movie. Any progress?

Nvidia has found the issue and the fix will be in the next Shield firmware update. We are trying to figure out if there is a workaround that can be done with the content itself, but don't have an answer for that yet.

Just bumping this thread. The problem is back. Only work around is uninstalling the NEWEST VUDU UPDATE. Then you need to relog in which is annoying.
