D2D - being bootlegged like crazy

So apparently, the new thing is that people will sell you "D2D" copies of their movies. You pay them and give them your user name and password for Vudu, and then they sign in as you and run the D2D, using their dvd, and adding it into your collection..

I wouldn't think this would be legal. It really is no different than copying someone's disc or downloading a ripped copy.. both of which are highly illegal.

Does Vudu have any plans of trying to stop it? Maybe limit access based on IP location or something....

Personally, I would never give someone access to my account, even temporary.

Just kind of shows why Disney doesn't offer D2D

No matter what companies do there will always be a small percentage of people that will do sketchy things. I do not think it is all that rampant

Could you quantify "like crazy"? It sounds like you're exaggerating for effect.

And I'm not sure what effect you're hoping for here. Is there something to be gained from publicizing the availability of this kind of thing? Are you expecting Vudu to make changes that somehow won't make things more difficult on the 98% of their customers who are honest? When has that ever happened?

Honestly, I don't see anything good coming from waving this in front of Vudu's face and saying "whatcha gonna do now?" You're not going to like the answer.

Yeah, cause I have nothing better to do than make exaggerated comments.

uhhh....maybe to let Vudu know that it is happening. Especially since they take forever to respond to emails, if they even do.

The people in this forum aren't thieves. I am not worried about them. Hiding from it doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

Well, since we all have a vested interest in Vudu succeeding, I don't think it is outlandish to make people aware of what is going on. And yes, if Vudu could make some kind of change to protect the integrity of the D2D system, it would be a benefit to everyone.

Not waving it front of their face....pointing out a very real problem.

I think you are underselling how many people are doing what I pointed out. I have seen forums and Facebook groups that have a lot of activity with it.

Uh, giving away access to your account to some stranger on ebay or whatever is pretty stupid anyway. Nice way to have your identity stolen (info in your account page).

That's what they said at one time about music downloading.

Vudu would be smart to find a way to stop it before it gets out of hand.
