I spent 45 mins on the phone with Redbox customer service explaining that it was not a rental, I bought them in the 'for sale' sub menu. They fought me and fought me on it. I *FINALLY* got a supervisor on the line who agreed to refund $75.00 bringing the discs to 11.00 each. Still more than I intended to pay seeing as the kiosk listed them at 5.00 each. I'm done with them forever.
I also have had bad recent experiences with them. For instance reserving movies beforehand and then the machine not working when I go to pick them up. I will be using Redbox less and less going forward.

      Re: Dear VUDU, Prices

Well, I don't think Vudu should come down to Redbox pricing, as with Redbox you still have to go out TO them in order to get those prices, and they have a very limited selection with almost no overhead.....

      But....

While there are some deals to be had on Vudu, there are more times where Vudu pricing is insane.

      Example...
the original 3 "The Librarian" movies.

EACH of the 3 HDX movies are $13.99 on Vudu ($41.97 total)

So I just bought the HD versions on Amazon Instant Video for 4.99, 4.99, and 12.99 ($22.97 total).

I can handle hitting the "AMAZON" icon on my Roku instead of the "VUDU" icon that sits right next to it in My Channels in order to save almost 50% off. Plus, still easier than getting up and switching out physical dvds.

That isn't an isolated incident either. Yeah, Amazon isn't UV (yet). Sorry, still am not paying twice the price.

Again, Vudu does have some good deals....but not consistently enough yet

"higher quality" Netflix has HD. HD vs HDX isn't that big of a deal to most people outside this forum..lol...

Personally, I don't really see why Netflix would be competition for Vudu. Netflix isn't a go-to source for someone who wants to own the movie or for new movie rentals...so they aren't taking business away from them that way.

For newer rentals, I would think the bigger competition is cable providers that have VOD. There are people like my parents who will just rent the new movies from their cable providers and then watch the other stuff that Netflix offers. They don't collect movies so they have no desire to buy them. I think there are a lot of people out there like that.

As for older film rentals, keep in mind the clientele. If someone wants to OWN the movie, they aren't going to go to Netflix in the first place, but for renting them it's hard to beat the $8/month Netflix charges.

          Re: Dear VUDU, Prices

It's kind of funny to read this thread in Feb of 2015. It seems VUDU has lowered their prices, at least when it comes to buying movies. It's not uncommon at all now for a new release to be $14.99 for an HDX copy. I remember not that long ago you couldn't find a new release on VUDU for less than $19.99. Maybe they're listening!

I don't believe Vudu is listening at all to threads like these. What are we here, 4 people? My point is that the active forum users are an extremely small percentage of their customers. Vudu and the studios are "listening" much more to sales charts and goals. When customers don't buy, prices go down. Customers speak louder with their wallets than they do in forums.

This digital world would be a better place if the prices of the Disney and Touchstone titles were lowered to $14.99

And Paramount too. Lately they've been pricing old catalog titles at $17.99.

At least their prices are going down...slowly but surely...until the next (4K) revolution hits and they start charging higher prices for it and then stop offering the lower quality versions so you have to buy new and start the cycle all over again...

I hear ya, but I get the feeling that VUDU has very little negotiating power with Disney. The House of Mouse sets the prices, and that's that. In a way, that's good.

In retail, pricing is low-hanging fruit. At a certain point, being the lowest price is no longer enough to keep/acquire customers. The focus then shifts to more expensive initiatives. Wal-Mart itself went through this about 5 years ago with it's massive rebranding initiative.

With VUDU, they have put a lot of time, and undoubtedly money, into improving the overall VUDU experience. They've hit some bumps with the new UI on devices (I still prefer the old one), but they've had several other wins with D2D, streamlining the UV setup process, simplifying the redemption process, joining DMA, and the Instawatch program. It remains to be seen how successful the Spark will be, but let's remember that it wasn't terribly long ago that VUDU had their own boxes.

The next thing I'd like to see VUDU do, is offer interoperable downloads. I don't care if it's the CFF or proprietary. I just want to get away from downloads being locked to a single device. For Disney's part, they need to make the Touchstone/Hollywood/etc. movies portable into DMA.

I agree CFF would be wonderful. I hate downloading the same movie over and over. I'd feel much more comfortable having the files in hand that I can use when and where I wish. I "own" them, it was promised to us, and I should be able to get these now. Obviously I could get the files elsewhere, but it's a lot of work, and they keep trying to make me feel like a criminal. I'd rather the studios do this for me.

I wonder if Disney saw a windfall from Vudu joining DMA. I know personally I added a bunch of Disney titles to my Vudu account since they gave me the option. If they did see a positive result, they may be more likely to add other titles.
