    4K Upgrades

Even though it's frustrating that Vudu doesn't upgrade our HDX purchases to UHD, it is good that we at least have the choice to purchase a UHD upgrade for movies we own. On iTunes, if you already own an MA movie through another retailer, you can't even purchase an upgrade if you want to. I don't understand why Apple is doing that. It seems to me they would make more money if they allowed it. Does anyone know why Apple is doing this?

No, they don't let you buy it but they'll let you "Gift" the movie and then you can enter your Apple email address and the gift will be sent to you and then you can redeem it. This is how I buy the 4k iTunes titles I want that are already coming over from MA in HD.

    127 UHD
    841 HDX
    3 SD

I should also note that gifting is not reporting correctly to MA as 4k. When you gift to yourself it is being sent to MA as HD but you can still watch it in 4k on iTunes.

Hopefully they change that soon. I have been missing out on a lot of good iTunes sales because we can't upgrade what we already own there, and gifting ports out as HD. One could assume that if they ever changed it, the gifted 4K titles would then port out as MA and overwrite their HD port, but I'm not taking a chance with as many as I would be trying to upgrade into MA eventually... I will wait it out and hope they change it, or allow us to purchase higher quality.

Okay, I was about to ask this question because I purchased Matrix on iTunes but it isn't upgrading it to UHD on Vudu. Stupid!!!

I will also wait it out from now on. This isn't right and needs to be changed. I wonder if it is a flaw within MA, or is Vudu essentially blocking the upgrade from happening because they want us to purchase the upgrade here?

I know this thread is old, but I want some clarification.

So you are re-buying the movie in iTunes as 4K (for the full $19.99) and gifting it to yourself? That sucks to have to rebuy the movie you already own again!

All of the 4K titles I bought in iTunes show up as HD everywhere else. It?s like Apple only sells us the HD version and allows us to watch it in 4K via Apple.
