Will there be a vudu app for Apple TV?

Many sites are reporting that Apple will finally allow developers to create apps for the Apple TV later this summer. I am hoping vudu will make an app for it.

That'd be nice. I use my Apple TV a lot. I'm using it as I type to play music. Having my Itunes movies and Vudu movies on one device would be great.

      I'd be all over that.

One Device to rule them all, One Device to find them; One Device to bring them all and on the TV bind them.

If I could get one device to do all my streaming from Vudu and iTunes, I would be one happy camper. Plus, it would make it easier for my wife so she wouldn't have to change inputs all the time on the TV. Either that, or have someone create an iTunes app for smart devices to get it on TVs or Bluray players. Either one would work for me.

Apple will likely want a 30% cut of all sales through Apple TV, which is likely a non starter for Vudu. It is possible they could make an app simply for playback like on the iPad however. I believe the Xbox app is like this? I am not sure.

Yep, that was the issue. I wondered why Apple would even allow an app that doesn't allow purchases in their little world, since it doesn't make them money, but then I remembered that a lot of people here have been holding off on purchasing streaming STBs or sticks because they don't have a VUDU app. I know it would make a big difference for me. Still, you would think that instead of forcing people to jump over to a web site then back to their Apple TV, they'd just allow direct in-app purchases without taking a cut. Maybe not soon, but eventually I think they'll cave.

I don't think the inability to have in-app movie purchases is necessarily a deal-killer. I'm sure that most of us who own Apple TVs also own an iPhone. So, just fire up the mobile-friendly VUDU website on your iPhone while you're sitting on your couch, find what you want, buy it, then use the app on the Apple TV to play it.

If rumors of Apple *finally* opening up the Apple TV to *all* 3rd party developers is true, I would hope that VUDU would get their app out there pretty quickly.

As for me, though, I recently switched back to using a TiVo (was using Windows Media Center for a while) and I like the fact that the TiVo support 24Hz playback of VUDU movies. The TiVo is looking promising for me as a "one device for everything" possibility.

If Vudu could just put the iPad app on the Apple TV, I'd be fine with that.

Hope they get that done for the itunes crowd. I'm glad I never got caught up in that though, With the Roku I already have had all my movies in one place and have Google play and Amazon available too.

Agreed, so long as it's in HDX and not limited to SD...

Re: Will there be a vudu app for Apple TV?

In the meantime, just so everyone knows, you can use the VUDU Player app on your iOS device (iPhone, iPad) and then AirPlay it to the AppleTV while it plays.

No, it's not ideal -- and it's in SD -- but it does work.

At least it's something in the meantime if all you have is an AppleTV (and not a Roku or VUDU Spark or some other VUDU-enabled device) connected to your TV. (I also note that using a Chromecast works too. And when you fling the video from iPhone to Chromecast, it plays in HDX.)

Hopefully the AppleTV will get a native VUDU app soon (but I'm not holding my breath, as they're an iTunes competitor.) Perhaps one day AirPlaying to it will support HDX.

I get an error message on my TV screen everytime I attempt to play a movie from the Iphone Vudu app via airplay to Apple TV. Any ideas?

Not any more. AirPlay from my iPhone Vudu app stopped working and I got this from Vudu Support:
"Unfortunately, VUDU are not supported with Apple TV or with Airplay. I have escalated your case to the correct department as feedback. If you have any further questions or concerns, please let us know."

They need to get off their duffs and support android tv as well.
