Someone help with MA question please

When The Darkest Hour was released I purchased it from itunes because they had it in 4K while Vudu did not offer it in UHD. They have since made it available in UHD however my copy is still in HDX. How do i get the UHD version in Vudu without purchasing it again??? Thanks!

In your Movies Anywhere account transaction history does it say iTunes 4K next to Darkest Hour? Tip: Press Cntrl + F and type in Darkest Hour when going to the transaction history.

Wow, it does not. I guess I screwed up when purchasing it?

It's possible you bought it before it was 4K on iTunes? If you bought it while it was HD on iTunes, it won't transfer out of iTunes to Movies Anywhere in 4K. The iTunes resolution at the time of purchase or code redemption is the resolution that is sent to Movies Anywhere. If you buy or redeem a title today on iTunes that's HD today and tomorrow it goes 4K, it will be sent to Movies Anywhere in HD; the title must be purchased or redeemed while it is 4K on iTunes for it to transfer to MA in 4K.

So if the title is UHD in MA, why doesn't it upgrade on all MA connected services when they get the title in UHD? This should be treated like a bug and should be reported to Vudu and all the other services but for some reason it's not. Vudu had no problem downgrading peoples' resolution according to their MA transaction history, but won't do the reverse. If the title is UHD in MA, then Vudu should honor that license whenever they get that title in UHD.

I find it especially odd that they keep track of UHD licenses at all since their website doesn't even list which titles are HD, UHD, or SD.
I think that the OP indicated that the title was not UHD in MA which is why it wasn't porting over in UHD to Vudu. I am not 100 percent certain, but I think they may have purchased the title on iTunes when it was HD and not UHD. If the title is UHD at MA, it will port over to MA providers for MA titles in UHD when they add it in UHD.

Still confusing as Itunes doesn't differentiate between HD and UHD licenses otherwise they would offer the latter for sale even if you already owned the title in HD. Itunes has shown that they clearly don't intend to make their 4K content available to MA customers who are heavily invested in another service. I already own all the titles I could want in 4K, except I already bought or redeemed them in HD on Vudu. Why Itunes doesn't want our money is anyone's guess.

OP, have you tried cancelling your order and purchasing it again?

Yes, it's very confusing and I wish it wasn't the case. There is a chance that when the OP bought the title through iTunes that it was in HD and not 4K. You can tell from iTunes on a MAC or PC that it is HD or 4K at that time of purchase.

He purchased it earlier this year. He can't cancel it.

For an Apple customer, HD and UHD is treated the same, because Apple customers get UHD upgrades. However, to get an iTunes purchase to port a UHD copy to MA, the title MUST be purchased from Apple WHILE the title is available in 4K.

IF you purchase a title from iTunes in 4K, it ports to your MA account in 4K. Apple does NOT currently have a way for one to repurchase HD content in 4K resolution and have it port out to MA. I wouldn't say they don't intend to in the future, but sadly, it does not appear to be a priority.

I agree this was a strange decision on Apple's part. Not only would they make more money off of digital purchases but there wouldn't have been mass returns of their Apple TV's shortly after MA's launch. Apple's decision makes no sense from a business perspective. It's also worrisome that Vudu or any other competing service hasn't introduced a similar feature even as people are jumping ship. I admit it would be tempting but I already own too many titles on Vudu, including many which are not MA compatible.

"For an Apple customer, HD and UHD is treated the same"

The problem is they treat it the same way for non Apple customers by not allowing them to purchase a higher resolution. I don't think you would have as many people complaining if instead of free upgrades, they had to pay HD prices for UHD content, but we can't even do that. Just being able to do that would make it more tempting for people to get an ATV to stream Itunes and Vudu content, but they are not interested in that either. I can't think of one good reason why they wouldn't welcome other digital customers.
