What is the BEST vudu viewing device for TV?

What is the BEST vudu viewing device for TV? I would love to hear what you all (anyone) uses! And feel free to comment on my reviews here as well.

First of all, the VUDU service is great. I've made many purchases and I like it. This post is specifically asking about the devices that connect VUDU to the TV, not the VUDU service itself.

    Chromecast:
I've tried chromecast. It works, but it is extremely slow to start a video. The android app is ONLY landscape so you have to hold the phone akward to control it, and the buttons are tiny on the phone. It isn't convenient at all. The chromecast controlling it with the laptop PC is better, but then you have a huge laptop to control the TV. The worst part of Chromecast is that it has lip sync problems.

    Samsung BD Player:
This is what I currently use. However, the Samsung gui isn't good. From the home screen, you have to go to APPS. Then you have to wait 15 seconds and then go and click on VUDU. If you don't wait 15 seconds, it will say the app is unavailalbe. Once inside the VUDU app, I see no way to do any sorting at all. It sorts in the reverse order that you purchased movies. It plays well, no lip sync issues ... but the fast forward and rewind are horrible. It jumps extrememly far in either direction unless you are super quick to hit rewind and then play. If you do it super fast, it only goes about 30 seconds that way. So, this is better than Chromecast, but not ideal.

    VUDU Spark (hdmi stick):
I've not tried this, but I have read some really bad things about it, and a lot of people returning it disappointed. So, I really don't have much incentive to try this product.

    ROKU:
I've never tried it. Does anyone have any really good critical review of it for VUDU, both pros and cons?

    ANYTHING ELSE:
Anything? I would like to have something that is nice and reliable and easy to use.

In my experience the best Vudu streaming device is the Roku 3. I have watched 3 hour plus movies with no buffering at all during the whole time. It varies with your ISP and your speed but I think it's the best streaming device. You need to reboot it once every few weeks or so if it keeps buffering over and over and then it will stop.

How is the GUI? How are the controls, fast forward, reverse, etc? Is the control smooth and easy to use? Can you change sort options? How long does it take to start the app?

I don't have personal experience with them, but look into Oppo blu-ray players. Objectively, they put a lot more processing power into their players than most, and I have to imagine that makes everything more responsive and faster loading. I understand there's little or no lag in their menu systems.

It's going to cost a few hundred dollars, but you did ask for the best!

I'd say if you're looking for performance stay away from sticks, because they all use wifi, which is more prone to hiccups, and all will have less memory and processor speed than set-top boxes (STBs).

Once you limit your choice to an ethernet wired box that has sufficient memory and processor capacity to stream HDX, it's probably trivial which one you pick. I'd suggest going with the one that has a total package of features that you want and need for the right price, because the VUDU app will be the same on most of them. (There were complaints about the Xbox One interface, but I believe it's finally been updated, but just be sure to do your research once you narrow it down.)

I find the Roku 3 very snappy and responsive, and yes, mine are wired. But there are a few encodes that the Roku 3 can't play. There are a couple of threads explaining this issue, which has never been a problem for me, but is something to consider if you're looking at the Roku 3:

          https://forum.vudu.com/showthread.php?935231-Movies-not-showing-up-on-Vudu-app-on-Roku-3&highlight=roku+audio
          https://forum.vudu.com/showthread.ph...ght=roku+audio

The other consideration is if your internet frequently drops or gets very slow, you might want to look for a STB with a hard drive so that you can download movies. I don't have one, so all I can say is that I think the gaming consoles both do this, but if that's a feature you want, that's something to definitely consider.

My personal preferences are Playstation 4, Playstation 3, and Roku 3. You can't go wrong with any of these devices.

You won't buy it just for vudu, but the Tivo Roamio is excellent.

                -Loads quickly, snappy interface
-Supports 1080p 24hz (film framerate) playback
                -Instant replay button

The Tivo remote has an 8 second skip back button and a 30 second skip forward button.

The skip forward button functions as next chapter in the vudu app, but the 8 second replay button works properly in the vudu app (it might be more like 10 or 15 seconds though) and I find it invaluable if you want to replay a scene or missed a line of dialog.

I've had a very positive experience with the Sony blu-ray player Vudu apps--aside from an occasional lag connecting to the Vudu service, they stream great in 1080p (I have Comcast high-speed internet) with little to any buffering. I run them off an ethernet connection, not over wi-fi.

I've also had very positive experiences with the Vudu Spark stick. Works much better over my wi-fi than the Chromecast, no buffering. Easy to set up, and I like the little remote instead of having to use my iphone. Plus, getting $25 in Vudu credits included with it pays for the device itself anyway.

I also have an Xbox 360, but their Vudu app is very clunky and prone to buffering for some reason, so I generally avoid using it.

One thing I've always been curious about - when I access the Vudu app on PS4 there is a setting to correct overscan, but this is not on the Roku 3. Is there no need for it there?

If I remember correctly there is, or was one, on the Roku Streaming Stick (HDMI version). But I couldn't find one either on the Roku 3 app.

Does it allow you to download to the HDD like you can with the PS3 app?

No, there is no option for that unfortunately, even though the device has a hard drive

This should be known by everybody its the PS3 hands down with the Media Remote is just a cherry on the top. Native HHD Downloading with ease of access HDD upgrading. I have a terabyte in mine. At the current market used price of about $100-$120 it also being a very exceptional blu-ray player WITH the BEST GUI by the way...its a no brainier that its the overall best.

PS4, same UI but, $280 more, no"Official Media Remote", CANNOT download to HDD.

And I hope you guys hardline your systems for peak performance.

                              ^What this guy said.

I still haven't "boxed" my PS3 yet, and I won't until either the PS4 gets a media remote or the Xbox One gets a significantly better VUDU app (supposedly in dev).
