    Vudu Name Change?

I assume I'm not the only one who received an email to take a survey from Vudu today. From the questions, it looks like Vudu is considering changing their name to either "Walmart Instant Video", "Spark TV", or something else with "Walmart" in it (exact name escapes me now). I don't like any of the alternate names better than Vudu, so I hope they don't go forward with this (at least until they have a better name). Although if it would mean getting the Vudu interface redesigned into something along the lines of what a real interface should be, I might be less inclined to object . . .

That would be unfortunate. It's not as though the name Vudu has massive brand recognition - many Walmart employees don't seem to know what it is - so I think they can move away from the Vudu name without doing much damage. But branding it with Walmart? Try this on for size:

Walmart = cool, premium experience, cutting-edge technology

    Nope.

    Walmart = savings

    That's the brand message.

I just can't see a home theater influencer bragging about his digital collection on Walmart Instant Video.

Walmart doesn't even always equal saving anymore. Spark wouldn't be bad. I could see Walmart being catastrophic. Some people avoid Wally World like the plague. You are automatically cutting out a good portion of digital content users by scaring them away with Walmart in the name.

Yeah, "Spark" would be the lesser of 3 evils IMO too. Walmart in the name would almost certainly hurt its stature.

That's why I wouldn't mind them changing the name to Walmart Instant Video. Hopefully they'll push for lower prices and pricematch their competitor's sales. And maybe they'll do more in-store promotions. It would be awesome if you could use Walmart Gift Cards.

Are they going to send me a new roku remote with the new name on it?

I absolutely agree with this. Also sometimes Joe Six Pack's influence can make or break a product. For many folks if it has Wally's name on it they feel more comfortable it's not way over their head and will try it. Frankly if they're asking this question is VUDU struggling?

Both Walmart and Spark have negative connotations for me so I wish they would leave it as "Vudu". Walmart because of the crowds of people and terrible customer service and Spark because that device (or actually the remote) didn't work well after trying 3 of them.

                    Re: Vudu Name Change?

I know folks who refuse to go to Walmart and will pick similar competitor stores before they would step inside. My concern is what is the motivation for the name change. Is it a simple change just to get the name out better or is there genuine struggles going on? The latter scares me because of the investment I have been putting in lately to VUDU. I use to just use the code that came with my in-store purchase blu-rays only but I've went full in now. Between doing several d2d transactions and just purchasing VUDU offered movies the thought VUDU may crash and burn leaves me feeling a little uneasy.

They should leave it as VUDU. It's finally starting to catch on. And I wouldn't want anything with the name Walmart added to it. I think I'd actually switch services.

Let me state I too would prefer they simply leave it as VUDU.

Pretty much the ONLY reason I buy movies at Walmart is for titles that Instawatch into my Vudu account, or to occasionally rummage through the $7.88 bin. I too have a HUGE investment in Vudu (with over 5,400 titles now), and so I am a little nervous as well . . .

I think it's better if they stay away from a name change. They already have a lot of brand awareness in the tech community. Vudu is well established. The logo is everywhere, on Smart TV boxes, Rokus, and on Game Consoles. If they change it to Wal-Mart Instant Video that would turn a lot of people off. Lots of people avoid Wal-Mart for many reasons.

I would like them to finish migrating to the new logo. The Roku App still uses the old one. If they want more people to use the service, they should do more advertising, especially on in store TV's.

As a marketing professional experienced with video distribution, I have to say that this re-branding/re-naming idea would be a bad move--far more negatives than positives. Know your target market, your competitive strengths and abide in that.
