    Re: Vudu Name Change?

A new slogan may be in order since all the iVoD store fronts offer similar playback quality. It made sense to be Vudu HD Movies four years ago, but the market has caught up now.

Maybe something like Vudu Disc-Free Movies (take your movies with you).

      Re: Vudu Name Change?

For me, the Vudu name is perfect as is. Changing it to Walmart would equate the service to cheapness and changing it to "Walmart Instant Video" would come off as an Amazon what to be (i.e. Amazon Instant Video).

        Re: Vudu Name Change?

The comments about brand-awareness and target-audience-in-the-tech-community got me thinking...what if they're being really ambitious? They might be trying to move Vudu from a niche to true mainstream adoption. (I have no idea of Vudu membership numbers, but in this day & age, even a couple of million members can be considered "niche"). Almost every TV sold today is a "smart TV" (ok...maybe not so smart, but they run streaming apps), and probably runs Vudu. They might be looking for a larger "target market". If this is the case, rebranding to Walmart would make sense (although I think Vudu is cooler, most people I know never heard of it).

        Just thinking out loud...

I'm guessing that Walmart is less concerned about the thousands of people that hate Walmart, and more interested in marketing to the 100 Million people that shop there every week. Most of their regular customers have no idea about Vudu. Even some of the employees have never heard of it. If they change the name to Walmart Instant Video, that'll solve a lot of marketing problems.

Pretty much this. VUDU is a cool name, and I like it (I'm from Louisiana ), but calling it Walmart Instant Video would give it immediate recognition to millions of people that have never heard of VUDU.

It did not work very well for Target to have their store name on their service.

Changing the name won't increase awareness of what it does, just who owns it. What they need to do is increase marketing of the service, I have never seen any TV commercials, radio ads, or anything other than web banners promoting the service. And those ads are targeted ads at me because I have done a search for vudu or have visited vudu.com.

Good point. Walmart should have enough resources to begin a massive marketing campaign and maybe that's what they plan on doing under the new name if they choose to change it?

But how many of those people are going to be willing to pay Vudu prices? I could just as easily predict that they would lose the anti-wally world crowd and not gain much in the way of walmart shoppers. I only go to walmart for instawatch and I can tell you people there tend to shop the $5 bin and the new release section tends to go untouched. People who shop at walmart for cheap movies are not going to buy a new release on Vudu for $15 to $20. They would wait for the prices to fall at walmart and best case they'd learn to use instawatch.

Also, look at Target Ticket. Target marketed the heck out of Target Ticket and couldn't get their more upscale shoppers to care. Why would Walmart be any different?

vudu plays to the Video on Demand concept that people have come to expect from TV. There is a new study out that says for the first time, live TV is no longer the primary content. DVR & OTT streaming together have replaced live TV. People expect the video on demand and the brand Vudu fits well into this market trend.
