    Vudu Spark

I dug out my old Spark yesterday, dusted it off, plugged it in and it still works! Bought it (about five years ago) because my Fire TV device didn't have Vudu , it had a great promo, with enough Vudu credits to cover the cost itself. I do have a Roku of course, so I can live without this but I love the novelty of it. So I've got it plugged into my Caavo and will continue it's use.

I always thought it would have done better as a more expensive box that allowed downloads.

Bandwidth just wasn't there for the mass market at the time, but a $100 box that allowed downloading for perfect playback would have been killer.

I bought 2 or 3 of those devices but they were never reliable for me so I ended up returning all of them. Vudu has been great as a video streaming provider but never as a hardware retailer.

That really would have been great.

                I'll top that.

                I had the Vudu XL

                1TB ! ! !

There's even one for sale on eBay for $80. Don't know if it still works with service, or if so if it will accept firmware updates. The remotes on these were non-standard though so you had to scroll through menus instead of up / down / left / right.
Vudu XL overview and full product specs on CNET.

Given that they are limited to 1080p, you're better off with a used PS3.

Agreed - while we still technically support the original VUDU boxes, they are frozen on an old version of the app (not enough RAM to run a recent version) and may have mediocre streaming performance for HDX (again, limited RAM). It's surprising there are a bunch of them still running, their HDDs must be 10+ years old at this point

I use a PS3 at home for streaming all the time - it supports the latest app features and still has a faster CPU/GPU than many new TVs and streaming boxes.

It's also one of the only platforms (outside of mobile) that allows downloading of movies, isn't it? Which is a nice option for the spare bedroom.

Are there any boxes that support 4K and offline storage ?

The Kaleidescape Strato S is the only one I know of.

                          https://www.kaleidescape.com/movie-players-servers/

Supports UV, but not MA, so probably not the best idea to invest in a player right now.

If you want offline play with max compatibility, a PS3 w/Vudu is your best bet. Limited to 1080p/HDX which is still plenty solid.
