Diamond is correct. This is mostly about money for most of the holdouts. Somewhat about control but mostly because of the cost.

I had been obsessively checking different feeds to find out if a date had been announced that Paramount, Lionsgate, MGM and/or any other studios have signed onto Movies Anywhere.

I personally would not expect to see any kind of movement with Paramount and Lionsgate until after Ultraviolet officially closes on July 31st. There is not a big enough incentive to join before UV closes. If we see it happen before then or even in 2019, I?ll be pleasantly and shockingly surprised. 2020 seems to be a more realistic goal.

If anyone has heard otherwise, please share.

Meanwhile, I use Vudu as my main library for all movies and redeem codes for all films that are not currently eligible on Movies Anywhere. Everything else gets redeemed through MA.

In general I redeem most everything through Vudu. Almost without exception TV shows and Sony titles always go through Vudu for me. For TV shows it's so that it can show that I own the entire season which is the only way to gain access to all special features, and for Sony titles so that I get both MA and Ultraviolet. However, there are a few exceptions for me. For example, HD codes that come with regular (non-4K blurays) I try to redeem on iTunes or Google Play so that I get the 4K license sent in to MoviesAnywhere. If I were to redeem the code directly on MoviesAnywhere I would only get an HD license, but redeeming them in iTunes or Google Play gives you a 4K license.

Has anyone heard anything at all, any hints, that Paramount, Lionsgate, or MGM will join Movies Anywhere? Probably not, but bringing this thread back just in case someone knows something (doubtful, I know).

I thought for sure all three would announce that they were joing BEFORE the end of July when UV went bust. I'm actually astounded they didn't.

MA costs studios more than UV did. If former-UV-non-MA studios experience underperforming sales there will be an incentive to join. If sales meet or exceed expectations then I wouldn't expect it any time soon if ever. And then there are the specific situations of these companies. Will Paramount have access to more or less money now that it's being merged back with CBS? Will Lionsgate spend millions to join MA if they're intending to sell themselves in the next year? With how quickly the media landscape changes, will MA be more or less relevant in two or three years?

MA is the industry standard for Digital movies now. Not joining is the modern day equivalent to not switching from Divix to DVD in the late 90s.

I know $$$$ is the deciding factor for the studios, but you would also think they would want to provide the best experience for their customers by joining MA. I sure hope it happens. I have about 800 movies from these studios NOT in MA and it's such a bummer!

I'm absolutely certain they will join MA. It's honestly in their best interest to do so. It's just a question of when.

MA is nothing like DIVX vs. DVD. DIVX vs. DVD was about business models: rent with the option to buy vs. buy outright. Consumers preferred DVD and it won.

MA is a value-add for consumers and a cost for studios. Like automatic transmissions for cars, it's a preference. The studios who were part of UV but have not joined MA are going to have excellent insight into whether UV/MA impacts their sales.

Several decades after DIVX's failure, consumers now are disfavoring buying and are focusing on video on demand, whether subscription or ad-supported. Preferences change. If I ran any of those studios I'd hold off until there was clear evidence that it affected sales of my product. As a customer, I hope it does affect sales and they join MA. It's the only reason they would.

I seriously doubt any of those three will join!

As mentioned on an earlier comment, all three studios have other priorities.

CBS and Viacom/Paramount are re-merging! In addition Paramount is in talks with Lionsgate to buy their Starz division.

Lionsgate and MGM are in talks for possible merger.

With all this going on, it will be at least 2021 before things are in a position for these studios to review. Paramount walked away from the original launch of MA because of financial terms. So unless things drastically change, I don't see them signing up.

I think the priority for MA should be adding more functionality to their service, as well as getting existing studios to add more content. The catalog being offered as MA is stagnant. If I remember correctly it launched with around 7.5k titles and nearly two years on, they are still only offering just over 8k titles.

If the priority is making money, they will join. MA is now the industry standard for Digital movies. They really have no choice but to join or be left in the dust.
