    OTT iVoD & sVoD vs. Optical Disc

    A back and forth branched on another thread concerning this topic and I thought it a good idea to start a new thread instead of continuing to be off topic on the other.

    I know there is disagreement concerning the place of optical disc. I believe it is fair to say that many view it as the principle means of playback, with OTT digital play back as a secondary option. Others believe that the OTT playback methods are trending to replace other forms and instead become principle. My personal view is the latter and I attribute it to the trend of cord-cutting catching on to the point of affecting blue chip stock prices.

    I do readily admit that I am heavily invested in OTT playback and have been a cord cutter for ~2yrs, which may make me biased. I have over 750 movie titles in my Vudu library and have not used an optical disc for playback in many years. The only time I purchase optical disc is as a means of discount d2d additions to my libary, after which the disc is stored in my garage. I just do not see the value of using an optical disc for playback when digital has so many eases of use.

    I thought a thread topic to vet the pros/cons of either view to be appropriate. I think contrary views will be expected for the forseeable future and it may be nice to have opposing views discussed.

    While I have been digitizing my collection since the introduction of disc to digital, I do not make many regular digital purchases, and I do not stream much. I have season passes for a select number of TV shows airing on channels I do not get, so I do not have to wait 6-12 months for home video release.

    1. Cost for digital only is frequently same price or higher than physical media, which may already include digital rights.

    2. I use the mobile hotspot feature on my cell phone as my only form of Internet. I have unlimited data and have never been speed-capped or shut out in a billing cycle, but I'd really be trying my luck if I went all-in.

    3. Use of the Vudu/Ultraviolet digital copies are presently too inconvenient with my usage scenario. I am a long time WMC user, and there is no way to integrate them into my library for access to everything in one place. All options to download movies are locked into proprietary software with no way to accept playback commands from a front-end like WMC or Kodi. CFF is still vaporware.

    Points 1 and 3 need to be addressed before I could seriously consider cutting out physical purchases. Point 2 is a matter of personal choice but switching providers could become a necessity depending on the approach taken. Cable service in my area however costs significantly more than I'm already paying, and does not match the quality of service in terms of speed and reliability.

      #3 could be resolved if the folks from Redmond sign a DECE contract, like they did last week with DMA. Personally, I see that more likely in the short term then CFF becoming the new portable standard.
