Let me break it down for you. Regardless of HDR, the UHD tier on both Netflix and Vudu is a higher bitrate and the quality is hands down better than the HDX version. I used the shield for a little while and tested this out.

And as far as DV goes, Vudu is f'ing up there. HDR10 has more support and a dynamic version is coming. Seeing as some manufacturers wont even touch DV, it's gonna die on the vine, but I think Vudu and LG, as well as a few others are in cahoots to push the DV side. Too bad though.

Long story short, you do not need HDR to benefit from the 2160p streaming tiers, so Vudu needs to be getting their updated app out to these devices ASAP.

The part that you said WRONG to was in fact WRONG. I stated exactly what you are griping about. I stated that until Vudu supports both Dolby Vision AND HDR10, the general public will not get the best experience they can get. UHD alone is not that great unless you are a few feet away from the screen. Depending on screen size, UHD vs an up-converted Blu-Ray is hardly noticeable from 10+ feet away. My TV makes Blu Rays look nearly as good as Streamed UHD content. At times, due to the compression of UHD streamed videos Blu Rays look even better. However, an up-converted Blu Ray doesn't come close to a UHD video with HDR. HDR is far more noticeable than added pixels.

I think we can all agree that UHD with HDR is a must for Vudu and the first step in getting there is to get UHD Vudu available to all of their users.

yes, 4k streaming beats 1080p streaming every day, but with vudu, i found the 4k SDR versions to not be much of an improvement over 1080P blu ray. I would not spend the money on a regular 4k SDR stream from vudu, it would have to have HDR in 1 form or another for it to be 'worth it'. i think thats what the other people are saying.

I thought all of the 4k Vudu titles were in Dolby Vision so that would mean none of them are SDR, right?

If your TV doesn't support DV, it would mean all VUDU movies are in SDR. The issue here is that they are not also supporting HDR10, so if that's all your TV supports (which is the case for most 4K TVs), then SDR's all you get.

This was the point I was trying to make as well. In my circle of friends, I know a handful of people that have a 4k set. Of that handful, ZERO chose a tv that is Dolby Vision compatible. This is what I meant when I said a large majority of the people that want to watch Vudu in UHD won't get AS GOOD a benefit as if they could watch with HDR10. I want to build a library of uhd content on Vudu, but UHD is not available yet. I won't even bother once it is available unless HDR10 is included, simply not worth it.

I have a Samsung 78" Curved TV that is UHD/4K compatible. I also have an XBox1, PS4 and PS3. Will any of these get UHD through VUDU, or do I have to buy an NVIDIA Shield or Roku 4? I also have a smart blue-ray player. If none of these will work, are there any plans to upgrade VUDU to where they will work, and if so, ETA? I purchased my first UHD title, but I don't see an option to play back in UHD.

I would agree with that for now, but all it takes is to add the EOTF metadata for HDR10 at the beginning of a Dolby Vision HDR stream to make it compatible with get HDR10 only TVs. The Dolby Vision HDR is contained with the stream and is could be totally separate from the HDR10. That's why DV doesn't require HDMI 2.0a for HDR, but HDR10 does. Both HDR versions can co-exist. (and FYI, Dolby calls HDR10 "generic HDR" because it's open source)

If Vudu wants HDR10 added to their current selection of UHD collection, of which I own a few, they would have to go back to Sony, Fox, or WB and ask for it, meaning renegotiate the contract, each individually, with a lot of lawyers.

If I was Vudu, and being the capitalistic penny-pinching SOB that I am. I'd wait til there were a lot more people with HDR10 UHD TVs. By black Friday of this year (I hope).

                My 2 cents

VUDU UHD support is under development, but Samsung TV firmware changes/fixes are required so it's taking a while.

You are correct that that previous year models are probably less likely to get UHD support - there is significant work/fixes required by TV manufacturers to support it, and of course they are less motivated to update platforms they no longer sell. VUDU on the other hand, is more motivated (since there are more out there) so we will do what we can!
Jake, this kind of feedback is greatly appreciated.

Can you comment on whether VUDU UHD support for 2016 Sony Android models is under development?

Without HDR the improvement is minimal. I already have access to the Vudu UHD content with SDR through the Roku4. HDR is the biggest improvement with the UHD format, not the actual resolution increase. Since you need to sit so close to see the resolution improvement. While with HDR you can see that even farther back than any seating distance.

Gaedel, unless I've missed an update, neither the Xbox 1, PSR, nor the PS3 even have the ability to play UHD content anyway. I understand that the new Xbox 1 S will do UHD streaming, and 4K discs, but I have no idea if it is compatible with VUDU UHD. Much as I love VUDU, I must say, I'm rather disappointed that I can't see their UHD on my Sony Bravia 4K, HDR, Android TV that I purchased about two months ago. Oh well.

                        Hello Gaedel,

What is the exact model of your Samsung TV? VUDU Plans to support UHD on 2016 Samsung TVs. This is being worked on. There is no timeline for when this will get done as VUDU is actively working with Samsung to make sure that UHD works to our high expectations.

Xbox1, PS4 and PS3 do not support UHD at all so those devices wont work. You can purchase a NVIDIA Shield or a ROKU 4 which does support UHD. All you have to do is make sure your TV's HDMI port supports HDCP 2.2 otherwise UHD will also not play.

                        Thanks,
                        Tam

Will there ever be support for this? Looks like if you don't have an LG, Vizio, or Roku 4, you are completely out of luck.
Can any VUDU mods respond to the above question about other providers?
For example, I have a Hisense 4k TV which utilizes a Opera TV Store. Amazon and Netflix apps both support 4k content but unfortunately no UHD under the VUDU app that is provided.

Will UHD Vudu ever be available through the Opera TV Store Apps or Google TVs? I hate having to spend extra money on a Shield or Roku for a TV that has the capabilities and the app already there.

                          Thanks.

Xbox One S (and all future Xbox models) does support HDR and UHD and in fact Netflix had a new version of their app ready for the systems launch a few weeks ago. The market is about to be flooded with these models soon and this will likely be the largest install base of UHD capable devices in a few short months.

Crazy that the VUDU app for xbox one is so poor. Hopefully this fact that it will be THE UHD device soon will help get us a universal app for windows/xbox with better support. I want to buy UHD content but no way I will until VUDU updates the xbox app.

Love my xbox one s btw. Incredible 4k player and Netflix looks amazing.
