The effort to make the app work on different devices seems somewhat similar in tenor.

And I know that it would really help to know what brands and/or models and/or platforms their working on, but there are also a lot of pitfalls with that, such as whether a certain effort might be abandoned if the manufacturer pulls out, which I'm just making up, but is similar to issues I've had with developing and updating and improving web sites.
My frustration is that they do not currently support UHD on the best sets, which are the higher end Sony, Samsung and LG OLED sets. This would be mitigated if they supported more streaming devices, but they don't. I am a long time Roku customer and I really like the platform, but the Roku 4 is a mess and it does not support HDR. Why not support devices with the hardware chops, like the Shield? Why not support UHD on the new Samsung UHD Blu-Ray player? For that matter, why no Vudu app on Amazon. It is clearly not that Amazon has a problem with UV, as Flixster is on there. It is maddening to not be able to get my hands on a single device that will allow me to watch content in UHD with HDR. It is also maddening that there is no incremental upgrade path for titles you already own, but that is not surprising this early in the game and also is not Vudu's fault.

How or does VuDu UHD play in UHD on the Vizio M50-C1 model 4K TV?
      I believe this is a 2015 model.
I know it has the VuDu app. But does this TV support VuDu's UHD?
      (If anyone knows?)

Jake from Vudu engineering posted about this a while back. In essence, because HDR10 was not well defined when Vudu started getting DV files from the studios (and one might argue that HDR10 is still not defined well enough, given the ugly state of the Samsung UHD BR players), the UHD files on Vudu do NOT use the "base layer = HDR10" approach that UHD BR uses.

Rather, the VUDU file base later is 10bit rec 709 color at 2160p -- no HDR at all, no expanded color space. The file also contains all the DV meta data -- which if your TV can understand it will give you 12 bit, HDR, and rec 2020-ish container.

Given how fubar the HDR10 experience has been for many users of the Samsung player -- where display devices have to "guess" about what mastering choices were made for the content (was peak which supposed to be 500nits or 1000 nits or 5000 nits? etc) and sometimes get it wrong -- I am not sure whether to commend Vudu or not, but in the spirit of not breaking things, one can argue Vudu made the wise conservative choice at the time.

That said, I'd love to have the OPTION to access a HDR10 base layer in Vudu content on a device like the ROku4 (though of course the Roku 4 doesn't (yet?) support any form of HDR).

Very well put. I would like to see the UHD titles as well with the HDR10 base layer at least on any UHD device. I have the Roku 4 which doesn't support HDR and the LG TV and Sumsung UHD player devices which don't support Vudu UHD at all.

Maybe this is why we aren't seeing it on more devices? Currently it is only on 2 platforms who have no devices with HDR10. Almost any other 4K platform would at least have one device that would be HDR. Maybe they didn't want to waste the effort on developing a version without HDR when they knew they were going to be doing an HDR10 version soon after?

It actually makes me wonder if they even had Roku agree to hold off on HDR deployment as a prerequisite to being the initial exclusive UHD external device (considering Roku apparently has HDMI 2.0a) - they don't want Amazon to look better than them until they're ready.

I wonder if I could use this tinfoil hat to get better reception on my UHD streaming player...

Actually I find that a colander does a better job than the tin foil, the 3 little legs on the colander manage to triangulate the signal more effectively, and.....the little holes in the colander allow for extremely effective heat dissipation.

The biggest reason UHD support is still limited is that studios have very strict security requirements for their 4K content - the device hardware and firmware must meet these requirements to stream UHD.

Sorry, we can't discuss unannounced devices in detail - but in general there will be a number of other TVs and STBs this year that support VUDU UHD, some with DolbyVision. It's also *possible* some 2015 TV models could get support, but this will depend on the device having adequate hardware security and manufacturer support in updating their firmware.

The problem with that approach is that it completely screws the majority of the people who shelled out huge money for HDR 10 sets. One of the main reasons I dropped $6k on a Sony XBR75X940C was HDR. Dolby Vision is not that widely adopted at this point. The vast majority of HDR sets are HDR 10, not DV.

I'm also really ticked that they are not rolling UHD out to Android TV or at least to specific vendors. Why are they so willing to simply ignore the customers who spent the most to get the best Sony and Samsung sets? It makes no sense to me. Why is the only STB they support the deeply flawed Roku 4 with its lip sync problems, red push issues and lack of HDR support?

Lack of HDR 10 support will likely cost you customers if you do not fix it, since the majority of past and current UHD sets do not support it. You are alienating the very people who spend the most money.

I actually used to own a Vizio M50-C1 model UHD TV before I decided to go bigger and get a different model that was on sale. To watch VUDU in UHD on the M50-C1, you use the built-in VUDU app from Vizio's smart-TV platform. The native app has UHD support. In fact, it's one of the very few series that supports VUDU UHD right out of the box. It looks fantastic, you just have to ensure you have a fast enough internet connection...

It is nice to see that the list got updated. Not nice to see that the list got updated to support ROKU TV. Most of the people I know that are shelling money out for 4k are not buying entry level TVs like the ones that offer ROKU TV. I am patiently holding on to that glimmer of hope that I will get TV support, but I am starting to think that I won't be getting it in the near future. It is sad that I don't own a single part of 4k media because my service of choice isn't offering it.
