Re: VUDU UHD - Compatible Devices List

    Hello,

I have a Samsung model (UN65JS8500) and I can stream Netflex + Youtube 4k videos fine. Whenever i use the APP for VUDU it doesnt even allow me the option to stream my movie in 4k. I have purchased a few movies including the new Batman. Any suggestions?

One thing to check is are you adjusting the settings while the DV movie is playing? It seems that TV may store settings separately for various inputs and modes.
The firmware is updated to the latest version and so is the vudu app. I've tried adjusting the picture controls and it doesn't improve the quality. Everything else looks great on the TV except when selecting UHD on Vudu. HDX on the same picture mode looks great.

My TV notifies me Dolby Vision is coming on. I tried playing this on 4 different movies Batman V Superman, Watchmen, Mad Max: Fury Road, & the Lego Movie. When I change any of those movies to HDX, they look much better. Rich colors and detail display. Is there something that needs to be updated for the Vudu app on the OLED55C6P? I've tried different picture modes and all experience the same issue.

Please let me know if you need any other info. I have a 90 mb Internet connection.
I noticed the same thing with Batman vs. Superman but I'm thinking it's the way the director intended it? I haven't checked the others you mentioned because I don't own them.

        20 UHD
        754 HDX

Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut is the best example where this happens. If you watch the opening fight scene in UHD. Their is excessive grain in the UHD and the blacks will go from black to greyish depending on the scene. The HDX doesn't have either issue.

I see LG 2016 OLED's mentioned in the compatibility list. Does that mean streaming only, or can you download to and play UHD/HDR movies from a VIDITY enabled storage device, like the WD My Passport Cinema? I'd buy one if I knew it wasn't Samsung only.

That's because your TV isn't compatible with Vudu UHD yet. They are working on it, but most of today's tvs don't work with Vudu and UHD playback yet. You wasted your money on those titles. They won't be viewable until Vudu gets your tv on the list. I am in the same boat as you. As extremely frustrated as I am, I know that this is a massive job and will take some time. I think vudu will get there, it is just going to take time.....I just hope my tv eventually makes the list.

At this point, this is likely not an issue with software development per se - they've developed VUDU apps on enough platforms that modifying them for 4K would not take this long, even with new DRM. This is licensing - VUDU is willing to give (develop) the app to companies that are willing to negotiate for it. Samsung isn't trying to sell 2015 TVs, so they have no incentive to do said negotiation.

If your TV isn't a 2016 (possibly even if it is), speaking as someone who has the JS8500, the only way you are likely to get VUDU 4k is to buy an external device (Roku 4 or, hopefully, Xbox One S) that supports it.

No, it's not about licensing, it's about development. A couple things in particular: VUDU needed to completely rewrite the app to support Samsung's "Tizen" platform and LG's WebOS platforms for 2016, and it was launched as soon as it was feature complete and stable. VUDU UHD support is under development, but Samsung TV firmware changes/fixes are required so it's taking a while.

You are correct that that previous year models are probably less likely to get UHD support - there is significant work/fixes required by TV manufacturers to support it, and of course they are less motivated to update platforms they no longer sell. VUDU on the other hand, is more motivated (since there are more out there) so we will do what we can!

I still haven't gotten a response from Vudu customer support after over a month since I reported the issue with the colors on UHD Dolby Vision titles being out of whack. Multiple films are effected, (I specifically own The Intern, Sherlock Holmes (first one), Goodfellas and The Conjuring.) With all four of these titles the skin tones are pale, strong blue hues are missing in every shot (so the sky looks white or purple instead of blue) and deep reds are also missing which gives the entire image a tan and green tint.

LG says its an issue on Vudu's end. Vudu seems to be ignoring me. Everyone just keeps saying it's my TV settings. I've tried everything. I've factory reset the TV, un-installed and re-installed Vudu, reset the image settings, changed the image settings. No matter what the image is screwed up. When I bump the film down to HDX instead of UHD the colors immediately go back to normal. Dolby Vision on Netflix and now Amazon are working perfectly fine. HDR content from my 4K UHD's on my Samsung Blu-ray player functions perfectly as well. I want Vudu to refund me the money for these four titles or fix the image. (I'd rather just have the image fixed.)

                      Hello That1guy,

Which LGTV model are you using? and are you using the default picture settings?

Please note that all the Dolby vision titles has been reviewed by Dolby and Warner and both have signed off on the Picture quality on the LGTV. That being said it could be a bug with the LGTV SW.. If this is the case I will push on my end for LG to address it. I will do a side by side of your LG TV model with the Vizio Reference Series and see what the difference is in picture quality.

                      Thanks,
                      Tam

I admit that my thought process was fairly cynical, and honestly I've always been confused because it does make sense that you guys would want this out on as many sets as possible, making the huge delay confusing to say the least. It's starting to sound, though, that for some reason it has been REALLY hard to get this app up and running, and it makes me wonder if the studios haven't forced artificially draconian security requirements on you guys (artificial because they were obviously fine with the security already available on these sets for 4k movies on Amazon) specifically in order to delay the rollout, since 4k may very well hurt box office profits.

I know you guys can't confirm that even if it were true, but if so, you all deserve a medal for having to develop for the specifications they must have imposed.

                          Hello Tam,

I'm not sure if you saw my prior posts but I'm experiencing the same issue with my LG TV. I have an OLED55C6p. The colors are washed out and there is excess grain when viewing UHD titles. I have the latest firmware installed. I reset the picture settings and I still have the same issue. When watching HDX, the colors look great and the grain is barely noticeable. Please let me know if you need additional info.

                            Hello dunnvudu

I looked at the C6 and compared it to the Vizio Reference series. I wouldn't say the colors are washed out. Maybe not as bright as the Vizio. Have you tried setting the picture setting to VIVID. This seems to make the colors more vibrant. I should the colors to LG and they will see if they can improve or suggest a setting.

As for the grain, that is actually in the movie you are watching. The grain is purposely added to the content to add depth and eliminate the soap opera effect and give the movie a more cinematic look.

                            Thanks
