    Walt Mossberg Column on Vudu

The Walt Mossberg review of the Vudu has been brought up several times recenly. While I like Mossberg most of the time (he's a Mac fan), I took issue with thie column for a number of reasons. But this review was only edited by Walt. It was not written by him. It was written by Katherine Boehret. Mossberg only edited the review.

The review is available here. And you can read my lengthy comment and rebuttal to the review that points out a number of flaws in Katherine's reasoning. Interesting to note that there are no comments following mine...

It's an interesting review. It's definitiely true that there is no product or technology that will make everyone happy. I had to laugh though. She goes on about how it has to compete with Tivo and cable companies' on demand capabilities. The reason I find it funny is that I have both of those things and I still went out and bought Vudus. As far as I am concerned, the only thing they have in common is they put a picture on my TV.

Made a good point about movie selection... Vudu needs more mainstream movies or it will fail. I am giving it a 2 months and then my vudu box is hitting ebay, the lack of newer (within the past 12 months) mainstream videos is just sad. I dont put up with not having the latest and greatest music on my XM radio so I am not going to put up with it on my videos.

People make this comment, but I frankly fail to understand it. What new, mainstream movies are not on Vudu? Yes, I know there's no Robert Zemekes films and no Pixar films (there probably won't be as Pixar is Steve's baby = iTunes exclusive). As for the Zemekes films, who knows, maybe he and possibly some other directors have a say in how their films are distributed. Maybe he doesn't want his films distributed digitally.

But for the most part, I believe every new release put out over the last 12 months has made it to the Vudu. And I think the rate of them is really accelerating. The complaint about them not being rentable right away is definitely valid and is something that I would hope would change as well.

I think 2 months is too short of a time period to get all you want, but suit yourself...

Please provide what mainstream movies form the last 12 months are not on the box...

Just for kicks to get back at you really quick how about a James Bond movie . If you really want I can pull out my DVD collection and about 3/4 of them are not on vudu or not available yet and I think I have main stream tastes.

James Bond is a good point. But there may be distribution restrictions with the producers of the Bond franchise.

But your comment was "mainstream movies over the last 12 months." I think Casino Royale was the only Bond movie over the last 12 months.

In general, I think that there are a lot of holes in the library over the span of time. The Bond movies are just one series that are missing. But having movies that you particularly like not in the library does not make the library bad. I'd be hard pressed to find any service that has every movie I've liked.

I frankly, compare Vudu to my cable VOD selection, the movie channels or my local Blockbuster. I find Vudu has a better selection than all of them. Maybe it doesn't have some of the films Blockbuster has but it has others it does not.

This will happen in time. The goal of Vudu is to have libraries comparable to Netflix. Netflix didn't have 50,000 movies from day one but it took a while to build up (and it was longer than 2 months).

I agree. If you were only going to give it 2 months, you just should have waited until it got to be what you wanted. If you sell it on ebay and then 6 months from now, it's really what you wanted, you will then buy it again and spend even more. Don't even say that you won't buy it because "they blew their chance". That would be ridiculous.

I just did a search and found out that so far only one Vudu shows up in the sold items history on eBay - $330.00. Not much of a market yet for used Vudus, so I'm surprised it got that high.

And it was probably sold by someone (was it you, Ed?) who was lucky enough to purchase it during the $249 fire sale!

I got mine during the $249 fire sale but there's no way I'm parting with it!

                    I love this thing.
