    Roku 4 and Vudu Question

I just found out that I am not seeing UHD on my Roku 4 Model 4400... I set my default playback to UHD in the Vudu app on the Roku. Started one of my UHD movies and I get the error "This device does not support HDCP 2.2 and playback will be HDX.

Ok, is it talking about the Roku 4 or the HDMI cable connecting it to the Samsung UHD TV ?

The list of compatible devices here lists the Roku as compatible which is why I bought it.

    Thanks for any help

To isolate the issue, is the Roku 4 connected directly to the TV or through an A/V Receiver?
If an A/V Receiver it may very well be the receiver is not HDCP 2.2 capable.

If connected directly make sure you have the Roku 4 connected to a port that shows HDCP 2.2 and the cable is HDMI 2.0.

Lastly it could be a firmware issue either on the TV or Roku 4.
I have a Samsung UHD TV connected to the Roku 4 and occasionally get that error. Restarting the Roku 4 allows UHD playback until I switch the TV to another input source.

It's direct to the TV. I switched the cable and restarted everything then back into Vudu. I can finally see UHD but I have to say.... I switched back and forth between HDX and UHD and it does look a bit better with UHD but I think I would say it is about as much difference as low contrast and high contrast. Some parts of the movie really looks good but not everything like in UHD demo videos.

Re: Roku 4 and Vudu Question

Another comment about all this new stuff. We have UHD TV and then we have other streaming devices attached to it plus each device has apps on it... on top of all that, we have what seems like several different types of HDMI cables...

We get error messages on our screen like I did... the problem is - What is sending the message and what does it mean? The TV, Roku, or an app on one of them... sometimes it's easy to figure out and sometimes not. I think there will have to be some standards made up before all this will ever work right.

And with me, my expectations for UHD were higher than what I found UHD to be... especially in movies... that is probably the movie studio though... a lot of what they do is not really there anyway, like the backgrounds.. so maybe that's why they don't look so UHD.

Re: Roku 4 and Vudu Question

I too am having issues with the Roku Ultra and Vudu. I have a Samsung KU6290 4k tv, along with a Samsung HW-K850 soundbar. I have my Roku connected via HDMI to the soundboard, then the soundbar to the TVs HDMI 1 input, since that is the only input that supports UHD color.

When I go to play a UHD vudu movie (such as Sing today), it buffers then briefly shows video, with a bit of sound, then gives me a purple screen that says HDCP 2.2 not enabled - and then says it will continue to play in HDX mode until HDCP 2.2 is enabled - but never does. I have to exit VUDU. This is a vudu/Roku message. Odd thing is, the Roku detected 4k UHD just fine during setup.

Now, I discovered that if I press pause immediately as the movie starts and wait a few seconds, then press play again, I don't get the error message and the movie plays fine (with Dolby Atmos too).

Clearly, this is some odd HDMI handshake timing issue with VUDU and Roku. This needs to be fixed ASAP as these movies are expensive, and not being able to play themusic back consistently and easily is frustrating, to say the least.

          Thank you for any help!

          Ryan

This does sound like HDCP 2.2 negotiation issues between the Roku, soundbar, and TV. Are you saying if you just wait, the purple screen never goes away? That purple screen is not part of the VUDU app, it's the Roku video decoder - and additionally the VUDU app does not do any of the HDMI/HDCP negotiation, that's also part of the Roku firmware. If you don't eventually see the purple go away/video come up, this sounds like a Roku bug - I'll forward this thread to our QA so they can reproduce and report it.
