    Studio Ghibli

HBO MAX bought the streaming rights to all of studio Ghibli films. Looks like we will never have them on Vudu. Shame.

Streaming rights have nothing to do with Vudu (outside of the Free w/Ads section).

Generally that's true, but we'd have to know specifics. When Hulu got streaming rights for King of the Hill, it was removed from digital retailers for purchase.

That's because they also took control of the EST rights.

It's EST rights that Vudu users should care about. If they are made available, then digital retailers can sell. If not, no sale.

Streaming rights (VOD) are a distinct thing. They can be bundled, but don't have to be. And given that Studio Ghibli films haven't been available for EST for awhile, it's difficult to say what the hold up is. It's possible that Studio Ghibli may just think that physical profit margins are higher and worth doing it that way. It may also be that EST rights are restricted due to different distribution rights in different territories.

I understand the difference, but just like HBO Max, Hulu doesn't sell content. Do you have a source of King of the Hill EST rights? I'm genuinely curious, because generally that isn't something that is made public.

Quite possibly, this could be the first stepping stone to seeing these titles eventually become available for digital purchase. These films have NEVER been available in digital format in any way. To quote a GKids rep earlier this year: "Studio Ghibli does not make their films available digitally, whether for download or streaming, anywhere in the world. They continue to believe that presentation is vital and particularly appreciate opportunities for audiences to experience the films together in a theatrical setting.? This seems like an odd statement since physical media has been available for decades.

Ghibli has apparently changed their tune, and although this current deal with Warner to stream on HBO Max is an exclusive deal, their "exclusive" rights contract likely won't last forever. HBO Max is a comparatively expensive service ($16 a month), and I can't see everyone flocking there for a handful of "Max-only" titles. Let's hope this endeavor is lucrative enough to break the dam, but not enough so to cause Ghibli to remain paired to HBO's service only.
